The pain of an old fashioned Republican

There's really interesting exchange going on now in The Forum that I thought this community might find of interest.  I am going to let it speak for itself, except to note below the fold one quote that I, as a former selectman, found telling.
I am continually amazed at the number of folks who have just retired to NH, know little about the state or it's people, and immediately run for the house or senate because they know "enough is enough" and they're going to "slash spending" and "cut your taxes"...

Slashing the already bare bone budgets in Concord typically results in 2 things; diminshed services to our communities and increased amounts of revenue needing to be raised locally.

The writer of this comment is a selectman in Deerfield, I believe he is a Republican, but he is also the fiscal agent for Maureen Mann, a Democrat running for re-election.  Two of our sitting House reps are Republicans who moved into town and immediately ran for office, I always say tongue in cheek, "as soon as they go their first property tax bill." We have another newcomer running on a platform in which he asks us to help him find ways to cut spending and have a "responsible" state budget.  I heard one of them was very upset to find, unlike in Taxachusetts where he came from, that one had to visit the transfer station or pay for private pickup for trash.
