OK, So Maybe Wolfeboro's a Little Different

I came up to my camp on Wednesday night, and went into town on Thursday.  Because I had to open up, I came without my 3 yo daughter and wife, and missed Mother's Day.  I am a lousy father and husband, though the reason I come up alone is that my wife and daughter are allergic to dust and I have to clean the place all by myself.  

Anyway, I decided to get them cards since my daughter loves cards (I got other stuff I will be giving them when I get home tonight -- jeez) in the mail.  

While in Blacks, I overheard an older couple making a "wide stance" joke.  Pretty funny.  Then I went up to Lydia's and there was a group of women in their late 50s to 60s arguing over the merits of bio-fuels and whether they were worth the carbon costs of production and the increased food costs worldwide.  Then I walked back down Main and there were four kids protesting the Iraq War for no apparent reason other than to do it.
What's amazing is that in New Jersey where we have the most Democratic state in the country (ever level of gov't from US Senate to state to county to local has more elected Dems than GOPs) I never hear these discussions out on the street.  We're supposed to be radical liberals because of civil unions (the law is not working) and family leave an other stuff. But public discussions like this just don't happen that often.  

Maybe Wolfeboro is a little different as a resort town and a place where lots of folks move to, but I think that's a good thing.  It's nice to see folks actually discussing these things without a computer connection between them, over a cup of coffee or while buying a post card.  It's usually this way when I come up out of season, during the week.  Folks who live here year 'round are always engaged in local, state and national politics.  The discussions are harder to find during the summer vacation season.

I'm leaving this morning, but I'll be back in June.  We'll see how it is again when there are more out-of-staters like me here.
