Meet Chet Edwards. Our Veep? w/video from the stump

Meet Chet Edwards, US Congressman from the TX 17th district which includes Crawford, TX.

I taped his remarks to a crowd at the VFW post in Manchester just last Sunday.

He was stumping in NH with Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) and the focus of the day was vet issues.

Edwards is extremely knowledgeable on Vet issues and a tireless champion for their interests, our interests, in the Congress.

The two have become fast friends in DC as Congressman Edwards, Carol's new BFF down there, is the chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and VA (MILCON/VA) and she's trying to get either a full service VA hospital in NH which is currently the only state in the country without one or equivalent care in communities for the state's 130K plus vet residents.

The guy takes a nice picture, no?

Here's the clip at YouTube of his remarks to the Vets on Sunday. The video is extremely dark, my apologies, but the audio comes through loud and clear. He said he was supposed to talk for only 3 minutes but that might end up being a few more with his Texas sized Southern drawl.

Chet Edwards stumps for votes in Manchester, NH (10:01)

The Congressman and maybe our new Veep ended his intro with a great anecdote about losing to Phil Gramm, his former econ professor, by just about 100 votes in his first race for Congress.

And I want to just say that one person can make a difference. I carry a very heavy burden on my life. I want you to know that when I was 26 years old, I had the gall to run against a former economics professor of mine for Congress ...

I lost by 115 votes to a guy named Phil Gramm. I don't want you to have the burden that I've felt since 1978. At least my credibility ought to be good because everything I said about him turned out to be true ... My point is this, if I had had a meeting like this on a Sunday afternoon like this and this many people had gotten one extra person to go to the polls Phil Gramm ladder never would have become law.

Here's the story from the LATimes mentioning Edwards as a possible nominee.

Attention this morning also turned to Texas Rep. Chet Edwards, who represents chunks of central and north Texas including Waco and Crawford, where President George Bush has his ranch. Edwards has been mentioned by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Edwards, 57, has been in the House since 1991 and before that served in the Texas Senate. He is a businessman, specializing in real estate and media, including rural radio stations. He has an MBA from Harvard.

And a news report from NECN about the Veep choice including a video that I can't embed at this site.

I did a CJ report, emphasis C, from the perspective of Carol Shea-Porter and did not focus on Edwards's remarks in that diary. If you'd like to know more about Carol Shea-Porter then you can take a look at last Monday's diary: Carol Shea-Porter in Manchester: "There is no excuse"

Edwards '10? (4.00 / 1)
Edwards may not get VP, but mention could help him in '10
By Wally Edge
The exposure he gets from speculation that he could become Barack Obama's running mate is likely to help the political career of Chet Edwards, an obscure Texas Congressman who was but on the VP list earlier this month by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  Edwards , who will be in New Hampshire this weekend campaigning for freshman Democratic U.S. Rep. Carol Shea Porter, could wind up running for the U.S. Senate in 2010, and his mention as a vice presidential candidate will help him increase his national base of friends - and his ability to raise money.

Smells like 50 state strategy to me.

For the record (0.00 / 0)
Some of Chet Edwards' record:
Historic increases for the VA health care and benefits system

- $11.8 billion in overall increases for VA health care and benefits since January 2007

- $3.4 billion increase for the VA Fiscal Year 2007 budget

- $1.8 billion in Supplemental funding in May 2007 Iraq war spending bill

- $6.6 billion increase in Fiscal Year 2008 VA Appropriations bill

Other key increases in the VA budget since January 2007:

- Medical Services $29.1 billion (from $22.5 billion, a 29% increase)

- Medical Administration $3.5 billion (from $2.9 billion, a 21% increase)

- Medical Facilities $4.1 billion (from $3.3 billion, a 24% increase)

- Medical Research $480 million (from $412 million, a 17% increase)

- Substance Abuse $428 million (from $358 million, a 20% increase)

- Homeless veterans $130 million (from $63.6 million, a 104% increase)

A 240% increase to $1.08 billion in the 2008 VA maintenance budget to improve VA facilities and prevent a Walter Reed-like tragedy from occurring in the VA system

Supporting our rural veterans who live far from VA facilities

- Increased the travel reimbursement from 11 cents/mile to 28.5 cents/mile. (First increase since 1979, when gas was 95 cents/gallon.)

Focusing on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury

- $2.9 billion on VA mental health care, a 32% increase since 2006.

- $66 million for a new Level 1 Polytrauma Center in San Antonio

- $100 million in the Iraq supplemental for mental health care.

- $8 million for additional Polytrauma support clinic teams and $5.4 million for additional Polytrauma needs

Focusing on the 400,000 claims backlog by hiring additional claims processors

- Added 3,100 new claims processors to the VA

- 400 new hires funded through FY07 CR

- 800 new hires funded through Iraq Supplemental

- 1,800 new hires funded by FY08 Omnibus

Other veterans issues:

-Congressman Edwards wrote the bill that would block the proposed tripling of TRICARE premiums for military retirees. Edwards introduced the Military Retiree Health Care Protection Act (H.R. 579) to prohibit the Pentagon from putting this burden on the backs of military retirees. Parts of Edwards' legislation were included in the Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007 and 2008.

-Congressman Edwards led the fight to eliminate the Disabled Veterans Tax. The only federal retirees that are penalized for collecting VA disability benefits are military retirees, who are taxed a dollar of retirement pay for every dollar of VA disability pay they get. Congressman Edwards and others were able to partially phase out the Disabled Veterans Tax, but there are many veterans still left out. Congressman Edwards continues to fight for a full repeal of this unfair tax.

thanks mbair (4.00 / 1)
Congressman Edwards is a terrific speaker, and has quite an impressive resume. He comes across as a genuinely nice person, and not just because he thinks so highly of Carol!

We now know he'll be able to continue helping Carol (0.00 / 0)
and New Hampshire in Congress.  Great to know him better through your post..

We certainly are nice and serious here (0.00 / 0)
and restrained.  It's instructive to follow mbair's link and review the dkos commentary.
