Jennifer Horn: Bank Crisis' Core Problem is Gov't Spending

by: Dean Barker

Mon Sep 22, 2008 at 15:30:00 PM EDT

Hey 2nd District Republicans - are you aware that you nominated someone who lacks a basic understanding of the financial meltdown occurring right now?

I'm not talking confused, or misunderstood, or even that she has an opinion the opposite of reasonable.

No - none of those. Jennifer S. Horn-Palin is absolutely clueless.  The 'Ticker:

"The core of this problem that we have is a growing economic problem that starts with the government getting its fiscal house in order, the government spends too much money it does not leave enough money in our pockets," Horn told the audience at New England College.

Most financial analysts believe the current crisis was initiated by a number of home foreclosures that began a ripple effect on major financial institutions which had not been heavily regulated.

In Jennifer Palin-Horn's world, the Sarah Horn-Palin supported Bridge to Nowhere is the reason that unregulated, unethical, short-term addled bank CEOs handed out crappy loans they knew were a bad long-term bet.

Unbelievable. And insulting, imho. Paul Hodes deserves a nominee he can debate on the issues. To do so, he needs a competitor with at least a tenuous grasp of them. But Fergus wanted a talk show host, so a talk show host is what the Granite State GOP got.

Horn: Standing on the GOP Platform without reservation (4.00 / 1)
JENNIFER HORN - STANDING ON THE REPUBLICAN PLATFORM WITHOUT RESERVATION

In Debate, Stands with GOP on Stem Cell Research, Social Security,
Flip-Flops on Oversight

(CONCORD)  In today's Second Congressional District Debate at New England College, sponsored by the AARP, Jennifer Horn demonstrated that she will defend the failed policies of George W. Bush and that she is out of touch with real New Hampshire values.  Among other issues discussed, Horn stated her opposition to embryonic stem cell research, argued in favor of privatizing social security, and flip-flopped on government oversight and regulation.

This is not surprising from a candidate who has said: "I do stand on the Republican platform without reservation." [TV-13, 3/11/08], and who, when asked if she would want George Bush to campaign for her, said that she, "would have a hard time saying no to the President." [NECN, 9/19/08]

"Jennifer Horn has said, repeatedly, that the real problem in Washington is politicians who won't stand up to their party," said Raymond Buckley, Chair of the New Hampshire Democratic Party. "But her performance today just confirms her status as a Bush Republican who won't stand up against her party for the people of New Hampshire."

JENNIFER HORN: DENYING THE SCIENCE BEHIND EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH

In today's debate, Horn said that the science "simply isn't there" for embryonic stem cell research. Her rationale for opposing it was based on her own research and "investigation," and she claims that it does not hold significant scientific promise.

This falls perfectly in line with the Republican Party platform recently adopted at the national convention. [AP, 9/22/08].

Horn apparently believes her own studies have more merit than those done by Nobel Prize winning research scientists.

A Nobel laureate in medicine says the Bush administration's limits on funding for embryonic stem cell research effectively have stopped the clock on American scientists' efforts to develop treatments for a host of chronic, debilitating diseases.

"This is a topic of science and medicine, but it's a topic that's become embroiled in politics," H. Robert Horvitz, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology biologist, said in New Hampshire. "In 10 years, a child with a spinal cord injury may be able to walk - if we start now," said Horvitz, a 2002 Nobel Prize winner.  "Some people who oppose embryonic stem cell research say the problem of curing these diseases is very far in the future," he said. "My response is: Let's get on with it." [AP, 8/17/04]

JENNIFER HORN WANTS TO PRIVATIZE SOCIAL SECURITY

Jennifer Horn took a page from the age-old Republican playbook: she flip-flopped on privatizing Social Security.

During the primary, Horn said that Americans "must be given the option to invest their Social Security savings. The government needs to stay out of the way and give citizens the opportunity to invest money that is rightfully theirs." [Granite Grok Candidate Questionnaire]

In today's debate, she repeatedly said, "I am not in favor of privatizing Social Security," but then repeatedly went into detail about plans that would do exactly that.

In light of recent financial catastrophes, the Wall Street Journal asked yesterday: "But if workers invest their Social Security taxes in the stock market, what happens if the market is down when it comes time to retire?" [WSJ, 9/22/08]

JENNIFER HORN FLIP-FLOPS ON ROLE OF GOVERNMENT REGULATION

Throughout her campaign, Jennifer Horn has consistently attacked government regulation as an impediment to allowing businesses to innovate and grow.  In the WMUR Republican candidates debate just two and a half weeks ago, Jennifer Horn claimed that: "The best thing that government can do to allow businesses to flourish and to grow better - uh - more better jobs, is to get out of the way of business." [WMUR, 9/4/08].

Additionally, she has routinely claimed that families facing foreclosure deserved no aid or assistance, and that their problems were caused by their own irresponsibility, and that the mortgage crisis affected relatively few people.  [WMUR, 9/4/08, additional sources].   Economists and financial experts widely agree that the current financial crisis was precipitated by the mortgage crisis.

In attacks on Paul Hodes in a press conference last week and in today's debate, she reversed her position, accusing Paul Hodes of not working hard enough to impose sufficient regulations on Wall Street firms.  Horn said that "This economic instability has been brewing for some time, and Congress chose to ignore all the signs."  [Horn Release, 9/16/08].

I just caught a clip from the debate. (0.00 / 0)
Horn was snotty, talking down to and claiming to educate Hodes.

When you are spouting absolute nonsense, I guess you have to do a lot of "educating".

I guess you can still be dumb as a box of rocks (4.00 / 1)
and run for higher office as a Republican in this country, but the past 8 years is was already the proof we needed for that.

Time to get back to work.

Horn on Social Security: (4.00 / 1)
Horn [said she] wants to give younger workers the option of investing in IRAs, 401ks and similar accounts instead of Social Security. That, she hopes, will create a solution that doesn't require cutting benefits to seniors, raising the retirement age or increasing payroll taxes.

"I'm not in favor of privatizing Social Security," she said. "I am in favor of individual retirement accounts."

Linky.

This is the standard, focus-group-tested lie from Rove & Co. If you re-direct one-third of FICA taxes away from the Social Security program into private accounts, you (surprise!) seriously weaken it. Out of one side of her mouth she says Social Security is in financial trouble. From the other she says it's OK to take its funds away.
