Former House Speaker Cobleigh Died

by: Alex Gallichon

Sun Feb 01, 2009 at 14:05:05 PM EST

( - promoted by Dean Barker)

Former state House Speaker Marshall Cobleigh, a champion of the First Amendment and the state's presidential primary, died yesterday at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after a lengthy illness.

He was 78.

"He really is the history of New Hampshire politics," Concord attorney Tom Rath said last night. "He had great institutional memory. He loved the give and take."

Cobleigh, who became a state representative in 1963, served as House speaker from 1969 to 1972.

More in the Union Leader. His book, We Ain't Making Sausage Here, is the best I've read about post-war New Hampshire politics.

A Good And Fascinating Man (0.00 / 0)
I'm so sorry to have learned late last night when a friend called me that Marshall Cobleigh had died.

He was Speaker during my first term in the House.  I still remember being in the House Chambers on my first day, fascinated by all the "old people" sitting there, with this rather young guy with what I'd call a roller-coaster voice and constant smile that often broke into a cascading laugh running the festivities.

I always enjoyed Marshall.  He was a good and fascinating man, Republican in his soul but more mainstreet than hardcore.  He was always ready with a quick quip and a whippy wit -- no one and no thing was off limits. There's something satisfying about that.

He'll be missed.  To see how much, read his book, or  talk with anyone -- Democrat or Republican -- who met him.

Marshall was the sort of guy who would beat you senseless for supporting a Democrat, then buy you a beer in the next breath. He knew that at the end of the day, we are all human, and we are all in this together. We're going to miss him.
