Senate Spinners Bluffing?

by: Dean Barker

Sun Feb 01, 2009 at 16:43:23 PM EST

Check out this Think Progress compilation from the Senate GOP-er talk show circuit:
Mitch initially averts his eyes when he gives his most definitive statement about a deal, Kyl backs off hard when the deal he describes is called a "deal", and Kay Bailey's spin has got nothing in it other than wishful thinking.

I think they just might be bluffing.  Or else Gregg fed them some don't worry be happy palaver that they took at face value without any specifics.

And if they're not bluffing, how awesomely undemocratic is it that three minority senators from other states are telling you what kind of senator you will have here in New Hampshire?

Tell Governor Lynch that he should make his choice based on what's best for New Hampshire, on not back-room deals from the Senate millionaire's club.

Howdy Doody (4.00 / 2)
does anyone else remember the mayor ?

Among the many unusual marionettes on the show was Phineas T. Bluster, Doodyville's entrepreneurial mayor. Howdy's grumpy nemesis, Bluster had eyebrows that shot straight up when he was surprised.

yeah its bluster

There is no question that I am old enough to remember Howdy Doody - the question now is whether my memory is still intact.

The Art of Distraction. (4.00 / 2)
The only art Republicans have mastered.

If Lynch Appoints a Republican (0.00 / 0)
He'll leave no choice but a full scale rebellion.
It will be time to start fielding a Democrat for governor.
Instead let's hope he does the right thing.

what would you think (0.00 / 0)
about a Pro-Obama "Ceremonial" R? as in my comments here http://www.bluehampshire.com/s...

Walter Peterson? (4.00 / 1)
The only one I can think of filling that billing would be Walter Peterson.  He was the first Governor I "served" with -- he was Governor my first term in the House in 1069, and I've liked him ever since.

In the past two years I've worked with him on the "Granny D" voluntary campaign public funding concept, and he could make that his highlight while serving in the United States Senate.  John Rauh, who was our Democratic US Senate nominee against Judd Gregg in 1992 in a very close race, is head of the Americans For Campaign Finance Reform and could work closely with Peterson in Washington.

He's just 86, and a young 86 at that.  Whenever I see or talk with him I'm amazed at his vitality and intelligence.

1069? (4.00 / 1)
I mean, I knew you'd been around for a while, but I didn't realize you were elected during the Norman conquest.

lol I Forget. (0.00 / 0)
I think it's 1969, you're right.  I can't remember sometimes.

Don't you know? (4.00 / 4)
In 1069, Jim wrote England's first law allowing marriage between Latinate French words and the native Anglo-Saxon.

Sorry, Alex, Jim; I couldn't resist.  :-)

I heard it will be Bonnie Newman (0.00 / 0)
It could be worse, but it should have been a lot better.

She is just about the worst possible (4.00 / 1)
from a Democratic perspective.

Unlike a Walter Peterson or Liz Hager, she could win a primary in 2010. Pledges to not do that are worthless - look at term limits pledges.

Question for Admin (0.00 / 0)
Who has been visiting BH lately? I'm curious to see how far these ripples go.

The giant checks its pockets.

Regrets? None!

Funny you should ask. (4.00 / 3)
This Gregg thing has really jumped our visits and new user counts. And the crazy part is that it's not really from being linked to by anyone big.

And it's causing readers who don't usually comment to comment, and lurkers to sign up, and everyone in general to be on a lot more than expected in late-Jan early-February of an off-year.

It makes sense - we're a state politics blog but our focus within that sphere, intentionally or not, has been on NH's part in federal elections.  So this story hits that core brand pretty hard, and has a reach between both in and out of state concerns.

NBC says Newman "may pledge not to run again" (0.00 / 0)
From Chuck Todd / NBC:

"The word is that she may pledge not to run again."
