Nadeau Weighing Senate Run

by: Dean Barker

Mon Feb 09, 2009 at 19:38:20 PM EST

No, not Justin, but former State Supreme Court Justice Joseph Nadeau.

Ben Smith, of all people, caught this potential candidate out of the blue.

Of course, from our internet-focused angle, this is the key line:

He's also taken a preliminary move toward running: The website Nadeau2010.com was registered over the weekend to "Nadeau for Senate."
This is an interesting development.  I think it goes without saying that the current framework suggests either a Hodes nomination unchallenged in the primary, or else a Carol-Paul matchup.

But presuming this is for real, Nadeau could open up the floodgates to a primary no matter what.

Some free, bipartisan advice (4.00 / 6)
Avoid this sort of spin:

"President Obama has challenged everybody to think beyond their usual routine to see what their contribution can be, and I'm going to see whether there's something I can do beyond the judiciary," Nadeau said.

This is the second politician I have seen quoted, looking at a possible Senate race, who has positioned it as a noble search to see whether he or she can be even more generous in sharing talent with us folks.

You are applying for a job.

You are supposed to be humble and ask for our support - not tell us how fortunate we are to have you available.

Disagree (4.00 / 1)
We've got some jokers in the Senate. If you think you're a good fit for the job, let me know, and be loud about it. I'll pick smart and arrogant over dumb and humble any day.

It might make sense this week to say you're Obama-inspired, but Sept. and Nov. 2010 are a long time from now. That's risky: an indicator of strong character, naïveté, or a lack of faith in the memories of voters.

Please don't act on that (4.00 / 1)
in your own career.

Because voters and employers can always find, and usually prefer, "smart and humble."

Good Luck Judge (0.00 / 0)
Portsmouth Herald local news from Oct. 6, 2005 on his retirement in 2005 after 37 years on the NH Bench.

Seacoast friends and lawyers praised Nadeau's career and his career change. Attorney Bill Shaheen of Dover grew up with Nadeau, and even tried cases against him when both men were young lawyers. He's argued cases before Nadeau, they go to the same church, and their immigrant Lebanese fathers were close friends.

It was in the cards...

I'm going to see whether there's something I can do beyond the judiciary," Nadeau told Politico.

He must have had encouragement for years and sees an opening. Gregg's attainment creates the one and only shot he'll have at a Senate seat. Good luck Judge !

If the kids can't bop to it, it's bombsville.

How do you get the (4.00 / 1)
name Nadeau from an immigrant Lebanese father? Obviously not impossible, but Nadeau is such a common Québécois name.

Lebanon was a French mandate (4.00 / 4)
Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in WWI, Lebanon became part of the French mandate of Syria. Lebanon has had an intimate relationship with France for close to a century.

America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand. -Harry Truman

Nadeau (0.00 / 0)
is more common a name in Quebec than it is in France, though. It's maybe more common than "Sullivan" here even!

The mandate period was pretty brief and not really comparable to the long term French administration of Morocco or colonial Algeria (which was as much a French department as Jura or Loire), but even in these places French surnames are fairly uncommon. Googling the guy suggests his grandparents were Lebanese. My thought was the copy got mangled or a lack of diligence in fact-checking.

Nadeau hopes to someday work in Lebanon, where his grandparents were born.
From Phillips-Exeter. This would make more sense.

Now this is interesting (0.00 / 0)
No doubt Nadeau would be a powerful and compelling candidate. Widely respected, he could do well in the media and offer both a change and reassurance. Interesting.
