I know Gregg has said he won't run for re-election in 2010. Yes, and he was going to be Secretary of Commerce, too.
On the other hand, I am not willing to believe that Gregg bailed out on principle because he couldn't abide changes in who runs the census. This is because I am not five-years old.
I wonder if we'll ever find out what was so much worse for Gregg than embarrassing himself in front of the nation.
It must be a very big deal indeed for him to have done that. But of course, if you read the usual beltway reporters on this, who uncritically and irresponsibly take him at his word, you would think the Villagers are, in fact, five-years old.
Update: Good for Landrigan for writing this up as a grown-up (boldface mine):
Gregg has been an unapologetic fiscal hawk for 30 years in Washington and Concord, so there would be plenty of financial decisions Obama could make that would make the New Hampshire senator uncomfortable.
But wouldn't all that have been obvious before he took the job?
Gregg said the census controversy was "overblown'' by the media and critics as a reason for his about-face.
Could the naked White House grab for the census and some ensuing conversations, however, have convinced Gregg that being the "token Republican'' in the economic cabinet was going to be a lonelier place than he had ever imagined?
If not, we're all left to imagine if there was something too unsettling for Gregg that would have come out during the Senate confirmation process.
