Losing Arnie Arnesen's "Political Chowder" Is A Blow To The Discussion

by: Rep. Jim Splaine

Sun Feb 15, 2009 at 12:06:28 PM EST

(What Jim said. - promoted by Dean Barker)

Arnie Arnesen is going on hiatus with her weekly televised Poitical Chowder talk show.  What a blow losing our weekly political discussion and critical thinking from an incredible woman who would have been a great Governor.

But her final show was filled with class as she took John Dad Sununu, the new chair of the New Hampshire Republican Party, way off his message -- if he had one -- in the first half hour.  If Sununu went onto her show with the intent of converting new Republicans, or shoring up the traditional ones, Arnie made sure he failed.

Many of us will miss our weekly bowl of Chowder.  It's not the way I wanted to begin my Spring diet.  But maybe we'll get Arnie back in another way.  She'd sure be a great candidate for any of a number of things.

Thanks Arnie. (0.00 / 0)
At separate times, Arnie had Mike Caulfield, Laura, Susan, and I on her show, and she once read something elwood blogged here.

It's easy to forget in 2009 that once upon a time blogging and bloggers were considered verboten to the Official Discourse.

I also think Arnie does a fabulous job on the show of drawing in people of all political stripes and giving them space to present their case, even when it's clear they are far away from her place on the political spectrum.

Agreed. (0.00 / 0)
I'm living out-of-state these days, so the only times I've been able to see Political Chowder have been through the links here. Whenever I've seen it, though, I've been impressed by her ability to be simultaneously civil and accommodating to her guests and their viewpoints, and unwilling to let people get away with half-truths and talking points. A brilliant, and potentially unmatched blend of civility and good political bias.

I also just wanted to suggest one amendment to the opening sentence from:

"an incredible woman who would have been a great Governor" to "an incredible woman who might yet make a great Governor". I don't want to keep looking back to 1990s like the other party is, but no sense ignoring good talent.

Is she leaving? Or was it canceled?

Stunning blow (0.00 / 0)
I can't sufficiently express my regret that Arnie is no longer going to be accessible on air. First the radio show was pulled and now my Sunday Chowder will likely become so random that I will miss it. (What is it about Public Access that you can't know ahead of time when anything is going to be available?) Sorry, I am a creature of habit. It is clear why this scene repeats itself in New Hampshire. The way that our government is set up there are no training wheels. There is no way to support yourself, even minimally as you get in line to join the paid political operatives. I think that house and senate people should be paid something so that those jobs are available to others than the old and rich. All this has been said a thousand times before. Particularly is these confusing times we need voices - particularly hers, to help us get and stay on the best path. She knows stuff. She will tell it to you. I have actually heard her summarize telling arguments which oppose her own views. She's funny, charming, accessible, knowledgeable and a New Hampshire treasure. To me, this is about the worst political thing I have seen happen here and there have been many.

That's lame... (0.00 / 0)

... it was a good show. Dean, Doug Lindner was on too! It was the episode featuring young adults running for statewide office. Pretty cool.

Arnie also had fellow Vermonters Dan DeWalt and Adrienne Kinne to discuss impeachment efforts from  across the river. She aired it just after Town Meeting and right before Betty Hall's impeachment resolution. Too bad it didn't go anywhere.

Arnie will find another way to get back on. She always does.

this makes me terribly sad (0.00 / 0)
Arnie's done a great job with this show. As we all know, the traditional NH media uses the same talking heads all the time. Arnie really mixed it up by having odd combinations of media (including dirty hippie bloggers) and legislators - all manner of viewpoints. That alone made this show worth watching. Combined with Arnie's wit and intelligence  - this show was a gem.

I'm sorry that we're losing Arnie's voice. I sure hope it's only temporary.
