Obstructionist Gregg in Full Bloom

by: Dean Barker

Wed Mar 25, 2009 at 06:07:56 AM EDT

Check out Judd "see-if-we-can-mess-up-the-legislation"* Gregg's giant photo spread in the NYT, where he is standing in his ideological corner next to a posterboard prop. How nice.

Remember when Gregg was picked for Commerce and Jim Splaine's hair went on fire?

My hair's on fire now.  Call me Cassandra, but this budget issue is a defining moment both for this president's first term and, more importantly, for desperately needed attention to health care, the environment, and education.

Gregg doesn't flinch about throwing billions to banksters for the crisis he and Bush created, but he doesn't want one thin dime going to longer term investment in the American people.

This is effectively, it is also important to remember, Judd Gregg's Last Stand.  He's out by the mid-term, and his biggest area of media draw is within the scope of the budget. And as I have stated repeatedly, he is, perversely, using his Commerce misadventure and his favorable opinion of the bank plan as leverage to gain greater credibility among the Village Scribes.

I think our Senior Senator understands the stakes perfectly well, and I think Obama does too, given the presser.  I admire both of them for their tenacity and drive here. But I fear the Democratic party at large is slower out of the gate, or worse among some, playing into the meme Gregg is crafting.

Here's a start for those still grappling with a response: Hey, Senator with all the budget know-how, where's your budget bill? You weren't elected to complain.

* quote from Harry Reid.

And Just Imagine... (4.00 / 1)
And just imagine the havoc he could have caused in the Barack Obama Adminstration! It's a good thing enough of us got fired up, and that he ran into some yet undisclosed bump in the road -- or someone visited him in his nightmares and got him to withdraw.

At least for us he's our nightmare for only a little time more.  In the Obama Administration it might have been their nightmare for much longer.

Don't be too sure... (0.00 / 0)
He could change his mind, there's no law agin' it...he's certainly loving the spotlight. It wouldn't be the first time a pol said something to the effect that, 'that was then and things have changed'. Maybe it's my sense of mischief, but Judd may have a hard time seeing a loser like Jr. filling his shoes.

Thought of that. . . . I sent in my contribution to Paul over the weekend just in case.  (Our Congressman is working it!)

I think it was a stunt. (4.00 / 1)
Let's see what we've got.  The Democrats are led by a tall skinny guy with protruding ears.  So, the Republicans surface a tall skinny guy with protruding ears.  It's so obvious, it's easy to overlook.

The real difference is that one guy has a plethora of vowels in his name and the other has a shortage.

Am I being superficial?  You bet.  Smoke and mirrors and magic are what sell.

Yes, I Agree... (0.00 / 0)
It's been my concern as I've often expressed that his political career "isn't over."  But I think he cooked so many potential political advertisements in January into February that if he does run, the Democratic nominee will be able to keep the focus on the ultimate flip-flopper.  The "should-I-say-yes-or-no" and then "when-they-say-yes-I'll-say-no" game he played with the Obama Administration showed him at his confused best.  And I say that as someone who actually likes the guy personally!

Well...off to Concord.

like Specter (4.00 / 1)
votes EFCA out of Committee because he knows Bush will never sign it, now opposes the bill because his back's against the wall with base. Two faced self serving bastards they are.

You must be mad! (0.00 / 0)
You are using Yoda grammar - "bastards they are."  I like Yoda grammar.

Remember when Gregg refused to vote to extend unemployment benefits in the last recession, when people here in NH were suffering?  Blech.

And health Care Sen. Specter? You had two bouts of cancer and the best health care in the world as a U.S. Senator. How about we all get that health care and big pensions to boot ?
Really, you'll get the boot from health care voters...and forget any attempt to suck up to me either. It won't work.

We ought to send Judd to Fargo (4.00 / 2)
they have an urgent need for professional sandbaggers there right now.

Perspective. (0.00 / 0)
Let's all keep in mind that, even after the Commerce fiasco, people in the other 49 states don't care what Judd Gregg says.  To them, he's "that Republican who embarrassed the President for no reason."

My response to this (4.00 / 1)
is the same as over here:

No! (respectfully)
Jane Q. Public is not the target.

The target is getting up in the tradmed's face enough times and emphatically so to produce a meme that goes "how can Obama possibly do this budget with the economic crisis?"

And if that chorus grows loud enough, pressure mounts. Enough pressure could result in triggering a more cautious approach from the WH.  Judd wins, and Jane Q. Public's access to health care loses.

This is a narrative battle among the talking heads, and I don't yet see enough pushback from those not in the Obama Admin who would make a good contrast to Gregg.

The Dems are still behind the curve, imo, in message coordination compared to the heyday of the Bush wreckage.

You are right. And I was wrong. (4.00 / 1)
So you get to sing the "I was right" song.

Well, FWIW, (4.00 / 1)
I hope I'm wrong.

What's the full Reid quote? (0.00 / 0)
