NH-02: This 'Aint Your Daddy's NHGOP

by: Dean Barker

Thu Mar 26, 2009 at 00:00:00 AM EDT

It must be really odd to be Charlie Bass these days.  He (wisely, imho) sits out a cycle, only to return and discover his party has marched hard to the right, and increasingly out of reach from a district such as the one he used to serve.

I mean, can you imagine the BassMaster in a NH-02 primary debate with Jennifer Horn, who twitter-cheers governors that keep help out of the hands of the unemployed during a severe economic crisis?

Or Milford's Len Mannino, who has announced an interest in the race?  On his blog he talks about how we Democrats "screw" hard working Americans.  Or consider this grandiose UL article comment:

But, a greater concern remains; it is the sudden and unwarranted change in our country's direction. When Obama signs the bogus stimulus package into law, the Democrat Party will have transitioned America from a system of capitalism to a socialist economy; it will be the first time in our nation's history that our White House is controlled by an old European style socialist leaning regime. The rejection of capitalism and the embrace of an old world system of governing is the greatest and most important story of our time, yet it has failed to receive any significant mention in the large media outlets. Let's be clear, this is not politics as usual; this is a fundamental change of government that increases the role and strength of government in nearly every facet of our lives. Never before has our domestic liberty been in greater peril than it is now as Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid cultivate the seeds of socialism in our country where just several months ago capitalism flourished.
That's a trip to the outer limits of entertainer Glenn Beckia, with a side order of Rushbo.  That's not even in the same solar system as Keene or Hanover or Concord or Berlin.  And that certainly 'aint from the tenor and era of Perkins - or even Charlie - Bass.

That's not even in the same solar system as Keene or Hanover or Concord or Berlin.  And that certainly 'aint from the tenor and era of Perkins - or even Charlie - Bass.

As a member of John Kasich's Budget Committee during the 104th-107th Congresses, Charlie voted to eliminate:

* LIHEAP
* The Department of Education
* The Federal Student Loan Program
* Americorps

. . . and many, many more.  Setting aside social issues, Charlie Bass is every bit as radical as Jennifer Horn.  He's a hell of a lot smarter than Horn, but I'm sure the man who referred to Newt Gingrich as the "greatest Speaker" in history wouldn't feel too out of place in a debate with her.

Silly Me (0.00 / 0)
I forgot to add Social Security to that list!

Lots more to discuss on Charlie, but I have to head to work.

I see what you mean, and I agree, (4.00 / 1)
but what I intended is more about the process and the image.

Charlie is like Judd - sneaky and faux dignified.

The New Wave seems to be loud and proud RW radio ideologues.

Both want the same goals, but for the former it's like a an aristocratic game of keeping progress away from the little people, whereas the latter actually believes these half-baked rhetorical blasts.

GOP implements Obama's vision (0.00 / 0)
What would happen, if we did everything that Obama proposes, but we do it using the conservative credo?

It's hard to imagine, but lets try using some simple examples.

The gubmint would shrink to "bean counter" status and all spending would be funneled to privatized equivalents. Thousands of small businesses would flourish because they would be needed to fill the void. SUCCESS!

Some examples:

The FBI - GONE! Each state would have some "Pinkerton" equivalent, maybe several. Maybe that "Dog" vigilante guy will step up to the plate, take the risk as only a true American entrepeneur can, and protect us from Billy Bulger, et al.

Army Corps of Engineers - GONE! We got more civil engineering pros out there than you can shake a stick at. And let me tell you, the principles at those firms think their Project Manager's chargeable ratio's SUCK. Folks that graduate from MIT don't work for the Corps. Oh, please.

The whole Dept. of Defense - Shit canned! It is completely obvious, that between Blackwater, Titan and KBR, American's would be safer than ever.

So, you get the idea right?

Regulations would be gutted to allow the free market to take us wherever it leads to. All the small businesses would ultimately be scooped up by giant conglomerates that are more efficient.

Costs will be reduced. Pollution, bah! Profits will be maximized! And our conservative utopia will be some dark, evil, twisted incarnation of feudal England where the Black Knight and Morgana rule the Round Table and "we the serfs" live by the crack of the whip of our corporate feudal masters.

The giant checks its pockets.

Regrets? None!

Well, it might be every crook's wet dream not to have to (4.00 / 1)
worry about the cops, but would he really like having no opposition to his schemes?

What made privatization attractive was the prospect of being able to transact business in secret.  But, is it really fun if nobody cares what your secrets are?

Evil needs good to define itself; much as the elite need subordinates to define their status.  So, the elite need us, but we don't need them.  Perhaps that accounts for their pervasive insecurity.
