"To Hell With the Kids"

My town held its school district meeting today.  We have not gone to SB2, so we meet and vote as a group.  The quote of the day has to be one voter who stood up during the discussion of the operating budget and announced, "Taxes are going up, I like my house and want to stay in it and to hell with the kids."
The budget was article 5.  We had passed by substantial margins a new one year paraprofessional contract and a new teachers contract, again one year, and the teachers had been without a contract for a year.  Both groups did agree to some changes to health insurance which will save the town some money.

After discussion the budget passed, again by a substantial margin.  There were about 200 people at the meeting, which is more than we have gotten in past years.

And the gentleman (term used advisedly) whose quote leads this diary?  His statement was met with a wave of shocked voices, which the moderator stopped with a smack of the gavel and a reminder that we were to be civil.  Some even suggested later that perhaps he was a mole, but I don't think so.  He is just angry and not inclined much to sharing. The majority do want to support our schools and our kids.  And I use the "our" on purpose, because there were people there who no longer have kids in the school who still voted to support education.  As one parent reminded us, these kids will be taking care of us one day.
