Liberaltarian

What Liberaltarian Means To Me

by: Will May

Liberaltarian is an unusual label, and it doesn't have a clear definition. With that in mind, I added a short clarification to my bio: "I inhabit an awkward ideological space between most libertarians and most liberals."

Clearly I need to do more.

I call myself a liberaltarian because I am not a libertarian-- I'm too liberal to be a libertarian. And yet I'm not a liberal-- I'm too libertarian to be a liberal. I cannot use either term without feeling dishonest.

So where does that leave me? I could try "classical liberal", but I don't think that's the case, either. It's too close to libertarianism-- just more eloquent and 200 years out of date.

My ideology is a weird, eclectic jumble of mostly libertarian, liberal, and moderate ideas, as well as ideas not associated with any major political faction, with a dose of agnosticism for good measure. I'm not even sure it's an ideology at all. What holds this ragtag mess together is a passion for the social sciences and good governance.
