The Seacoast Republican Women have invited Speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, Bill O'Brien, to address them at the Portsmouth Elks Club on Monday morning, May 16. They have asked the Speaker "for a first-hand update on all the legislation introduced and passed by our State Representatives."
In response, the Portsmouth Democratic Committee is organizing a community protest, to say no to O'Brien's extreme agenda for New Hampshire. Between 9 am and 10 am on Monday, May 16, there will be a visibility on the sidewalk on Sagamore Avenue near Jones Avenue (across from the South Cemetery).
Elected on promises to create jobs and improve the economy, Speaker O'Brien and his Republican majority are doing anything but that. Instead, they are pursuing a reckless and destructive agenda that will fundamentally change the character of our Granite State. Using bullying tactics to get their way, they are implementing a dangerous theory of government that hurts NH citizens and harms our way of life.
We cannot be silent about their outrageous actions! We need to speak up and stand up for the state we love! Please join us to protest O'Brien's visit. We need to send a clear message: we reject O'Brien's extreme agenda!
Stand up! Show up! Join us! Bring your signs and bring your friends!
Republicans in the New Hampshire House of Representatives are developing an image problem. Their arrogance, rudeness, and abuses of power are catching up with them.
The latest proof comes in yesterday's editorial on the Keene Sentinel web site. Entitled "Will the House majority leader change his ways?", it is mainly directed at Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt for his description of Catholic Bishop John McCormack as a "pedophile pimp." After discussing Bettencourt's situation, the editorial goes on to say:
But Bettencourt's assault on McCormack was not an isolated event; since being named to his current office, he has been part of a boorish band of politicians who have bullied their way through protocol and decorum in Concord as they attempt to, as they put it, set things right.
Indeed, the tone of Bettencourt's attack on the bishop implies a lot about his standard of conduct in the Statehouse. In the case of the bishop, Bettencourt now says that he erred. Regardless of his political principles, he must now demonstrate a similar sensitivity to his behavior in the halls of government.
Stong language but similar things are appearing with growing frequency in Granite State media. What must former NH GOP Chair John Sununu be thinking now?
