Credit Where Credit Is Due

Didn't see this coming:
One moment of dissent for Lamontagne came when the candidates were asked about the war in Iraq. Lamontagne, alone among the candidates, said he believed going into Iraq was a mistake.

"We went on a false premise" that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, he said.

Thank you, Mr. Lamontagne, for not sweeping the biggest foreign policy mistake of my lifetime under the rug.

UNH: CSP All Tied Up, Kuster Within MoE

by: Dean Barker

Thu Apr 29, 2010 at 19:55:43 PM EDT

Pindell's posting the new UNH poll numbers that came out tonight.  It's hard to know what to make of them, given that we don't know if Andy Smith polled Cloud Hampshire or New Hampshire (though happily it was the latter in the previous poll).  Numbers and observations below the fold...

UPDATE: Oh well; looks like another tour of Cloud Hampshire after all:

Democrat: 187
Independent: 72
Republican: 192
END UPDATE.

Buzz and Reverb

A very trustworthy source expressed doubts about some of the claims in the 'Ticker piece about Carol on Thursday, so I decided to not to touch on it here.

Then the ice storm hit, and I lost power for a few days.  In the interim, Pindell's piece created a fairly significant buzz over at SSP and dKos.  By the time I got back on, it was too late to leave a substantive remark in a decent time frame.  So while I'm late to the party, I hope you'll indulge me. And forgive me too, because I'm about to lay a pox on both houses of conventional wisdom, tradmed and netroots.  And I say that as someone who has a daily addiction to the outstanding work at the 'Ticker and SSP and dKos.

First, let's set a ground rule.  If I say something encouraging about Carol Shea-Porter's ability to win a senate race, that doesn't mean I don't want Paul Hodes as my next senator, or vice versa.  So let me make something perfectly clear before going forward: I'd be absolutely thrilled to have either Carol or Paul be our senate nominee.  Either one of them would be a strong progressive voice for a legislative body that badly needs progressive voices, and both of them, I believe emphatically, have what it takes to win the race.

Lobbyist Stew: Spoiled Elephant, Overpriced Pork, & Fishwrap

by: Dean Barker

( - promoted by Dean)

Given the "Republican Massacre of '06", one would think that our local media would be tripping over themselves to find out what's going on in the minds of the Granite Staters who voted overwhelmingly for change.

Think again.  Just ten days after an election which saw the NH GOP nearly wiped out, we get treated to a free campaign brochure for Senators Gregg and Sununu from the Union Leader, lovingly named "NH senators expect to survive, thrive".

The angle, ostensibly, is a write-up of how life will be different for Gregg and Sununu now that they will be in the minority, but the subtext is loud and clear: "Dont' worry, dear member of the investor class. Despite the pesky will of the mob (all worked up over "silly season" matters like war and the Constitution), you needn't place a panicked call to your portfolio manager. All is well."

In other words, the wheels of the formula (GOP + Government = More Free Pork, Less Taxes and Less Conscience) will remain greased.

Exegesis below the fold...
