Please consider this an open thread, if only so that my rambling far off-topic is more easily glossed over.
Has anyone else noticed an odd trend to Red Sox pitching this year - and particularly Jon Lester? Specifically, I'm referring to a tendency to breeze through most of the game with a fair degree of dominance, but have just that one bad inning where the other team gets a bunch of runs. I noticed it yesterday, when he'd been looking great, then all of the sudden gave up the ballgame. So I grabbed his game logs and stuck them in a spreadsheet. Sure enough, it's that fifth inning that's really been his killer...
After promoting the Sox ticket raffle on this site I was very surprised to receive a call on Saturday, July 19th from Dan Swislow telling me I had won the tickets.
I accused him of yanking my chain and a few other things I can't repeat then went nuts planning for my visit to the shrine on top of Fenway.
Thank you Dan. Thank you Shaheen campaign for a once in a life time evening with my son. The memories will be with us forever.
I took a Shaheen yard sign with me and used the reverse side for my welcome back Big Papi sign that got on NESN. I still haven't watched the whole game on TIVO but if I find a video of me holding the Shaheen side up, I will post it.
BOSTON (AP)-Jon Lester can now add pitching a no-hitter to his already amazing list of accomplishments.
The 24-year-old lefty, who survived cancer to pitch the clincher of Boston's 2007 World Series victory, shut down Kansas City 7-0 Monday night for the first no-hitter in the majors this season.
"Really, words can't describe it right now," Lester said.
Jason Varitek becomes the first catcher in history to catch four no hitters.
It was bad enough that he took the money and went to New York to play for the Yankees.
Now, another example of his lack of judgment. From the Hotline on Call:
ORLANDO - With polls showing Rudy Giuliani down his home state, the former New York City found a local slugger to go to bat for him.
New York Yankees centerfielder Johnny Damon stumped for Giuliani today at the Presidential Ballroom at Church Street.
"Rudy comes and visits me at the ballpark quite a bit, so I figure I could drive down the street and visit him here," he said. "Rudy has done such a great job for New York. After the terrorism, he stepped up and he made New York closer, he made America closer and he's gonna make this country a better place."
So, after 9/11, I stopped paying attention to sports (unlike Rudy), but the question must be asked, especially as we are on the eve of the Patriots' attempt to make history over the New York Giants (or not):
What will Red Sox Rudy do? Root for New Hampshire's team again, or will Mr. 9/11 stay true to his hometown?
I maintain that perceived trust and character are the prime ingredients in the decision made in the private realm of the voting booth. Exhibit A: Rudy Giuliani's latest poll numbers.
It has come to my attention that Rudy!, under whose mayoralty I suffered for a number of years in mid to late 90's Manhattan, the Bronx, and Queens (variously), and who seemed to spend more time at Yankee Stadium than at Gracie Mansion or City Hall, suddenly fancies himself a Red Sox fan. And where is Charlie Bass to tell him to go "back to the Bronx"?
On behalf of New Yorker flatlanders everywhere, I thoroughly apologize. Not all of us are so obviously pandering. For example, when I moved here eight years ago, I made a deal that I would support all the other Boston-based sports teams, but that I would keep my Yankee-ism quietly to myself (I am hardly to blame for this; I have a mother who grew up in the Bronx - it's practically in my DNA).
One final note: that 9/11 Savior of New York City Rudy! could think that this egregious flip-flop would help him win votes in Red Sox Nation is frightening. I think road and yard signs of him in his ubiquitous Yankees cap are in order a week before primary day.
At least there is a silver lining here: Rudy! has been so thoroughly skewered by NY media for this that a Red Sox world series win will only put him further in the dog house, so - Go Sox!
