Goodbye Will

by: susanthe

Fri Aug 29, 2008 at 23:31:13 PM EDT

This past Tuesday, Will Cowie of Stark, who was running for state rep in Coos Dist, 2 died on a job site where he was electrocuted. He was 44. Will was a proud veteran, both in the Air Force right after high school, and later in the National Guard. He was active in the American Legion, and in nearly every aspect of his community. He was absolutely devoted to his wife, Margaret. Will was a smart, funny, feminist man. He would have been a great addition to the NH House.

My favorite Will story goes back to the NH Commission on Same Sex Marriage. The Commission had a number of hearings around the state in the summer of 2005. The first one was in Littleton, where I believe the thought was that it would be poorly attended, but those in attendance would be outraged, bigoted, redneck hicks.

Over 100 people were in attendance that night, and only six of them testified against marriage equality. Early in the evening, a tall man with a military haircut came in, wearing a suit, and carrying a Bible. Most folks assumed he was there to speak against same gender marriage. Instead, he said he saw no reason that we shouldn't all have the same rights and privileges, and that he didn't see anything in the book he was holding that said any different. That was Will.

I loved Will. I'll miss him.          obit

Today I spoke for the Homeless on the Op-Ed page of the Union Leader

by: newhampster

Fri Nov 16, 2007 at 15:59:04 PM EST

I sent yesterday's post about homeless vets in Manchester to the Union Leader.  They called and wanted to verify that it was indeed my story since they'd seen it on dKos.  Too large for a letter so they ran it as an Op-Ed and the editor thanked me for bringing the issue out.

I'd rather people thank these homeless vets with a check or some food.  It's really easy to do.

Today I visited a Homeless Veteran's Shelter in Manchester

( - promoted by Laura Clawson)

Last night at the monthly meeting of the Londonderry Democratic Committee we collected canned goods for Liberty House. This morning I had the honor of delivering the goods.

Liberty House is a transitional home and drop in center for vets. We first heard about Liberty House from our September speaker, NH Rep. Steve Shurtleff (D), a veteran and retired US Marshall. Since that meeting we've been working on ways to support and hopefully in 2008, make Liberty House the focus of our fund raising efforts.

In my opinion there is no better group of people for Democrats to support than the forgotten veterans on our streets. These men and women are mostly from the Vietnam and First Gulf War eras but many vets from the current wars are being cast off by families and ending up on the street. We support them and we Democrats support candidates who will not forget their service to our country once they come home.

Read on for one Vet's story.

Retired Marine & NH Rep. Endorses Obama

A Politics of Self-improvement--Kris Roberts' Story

By Eddie Lee, NH Obama Staff - Sep 18th, 2007 at 11:25 pm EDT

Keene resident Kris Roberts grew up with the odds stacked against him.  Raised on welfare in a single-mother household with nine brothers and sisters, his life could easily have been spent in obscurity, living paycheck-to-paycheck.  His desire for something better led him to seek a commission as a Marine Corps officer.  His experiences as a Marine have prepared him to be a leader in the NH State House, where the plight of his fellow veterans has become his primary focus.  It has also led him to become a member of the Obama for New Hampshire Veterans Steering Committee.

This is his story.

To further respond to Gallichon's corcern over the style of Internationalism that Senator Obama is promoting by his candidacy.

PRESS RELEASE

Combat Veteran of  Desert Storm Becomes Kucinich National Campaign Manager

WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Democratic Presidential candidate and Congressman Dennis Kucinich formally introduced his new National Campaign Manager: Army combat veteran and business consultant Mike Klein.
A graduate of West Point, Klein was an Airborne Ranger Infantry Lieutenant serving in the 25th Infantry Division, and was assigned to Army Central Command in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm.
"Mike is a strong leader who combines exceptional organizational and management skills with keen political insights and instincts," said Kucinich.
Klein comes from a military family and carried on the tradition from his father, who was a Lt. Commander in the Navy. Although born in San Diego, he has lived in ten states around the country. He continued his military service in the Army Reserves with the rank of Captain until 2003.
He is now working as a business consultant specializing in media and early stage technology companies. Klein accepted the position of Campaign Manager because of his passionate support for Kucinich's vision of a more secure path for America.
"I do not believe that our current path is viable in economic or security terms," said Klein. "I categorically disagree with right wing, neo- conservative policy. I fully support the Strength through Peace doctrine. Because of my military background, I believe this is the only basis for a sustainable future."
