ANDY WHITE WINS! And What YOU Can Do To Make A Win Tomorrow

by: Rep. Jim Splaine

Tue Jun 02, 2009 at 20:29:42 PM EDT

(Awesome. And per Mayor Liot Hill's comment, Andy will not only be sworn in tomorrow morning, but he'll speak at the marriage equality rally. - promoted by Dean Barker)

First, the GREAT news:  Andy White won the special election in Lebanon today!  Another vote for marriage equality, and another very good Democrat going to Concord to fight for other important causes.

Now, onto tomorrow, where it will be CLOSE.  One, two, three votes will likely make the difference.

Yes, tomorrow's THE DAY.  Or, if you're reading this Wednesday morning, it's today.  Just one more chance for marriage equality for this year, and if we don't do it this time it might be tough to do for a while.  IF we can do this, it will help the causes of keeping marriage equality in Maine, where their new law faces a referendum this November, as well as contribute to the efforts for marriage equality in New York, Rhode Island, and New Jersey.  And all this helps the national cause to eliminate DOMA -- the "Defense Of Marriage Act."

But most important is the positive message it will give to so many people throughout New Hampshire and elsewhere -- that yet another state is saying that under law, there should be equality for all.  What a wonderful message for our young people, and for all of our gay and lesbian friends, co-workers, neighbors, and family members.

BUT, we need your help, and there is time.  The out-of-state opponents of marriage equality have spent upwards of half a million dollars or more to stop our efforts.  They have thrown every parliamentary maneuver to slow us down.  But so far, we've overcome with our support from New Hampshire residents.

Please, if your local Legislator voted against House Bill 73 on May 20th  http://www.gencourt.state.nh.u... give him or her a last-minute call, and/or send an E-Mail.  You'll find all the contacts here:  http://www.gencourt.state.nh.u...

Plus, on Wednesday morning in front of the State House, please join the RALLY FOR EQUALITY at 9:00 AM.  And/or plan to be in the House gallery during the day, and visit the second floor of the State House where Legislators roam the hallways and do a bit of lobbying.  Ask for your personal House Rep. and say hi, and urge a vote for HB 73.

Go to the NH Freedom To Marry WEBSITE at http://nhftm.org/  for other ideas of how you can help now.

Equality. 2009.  Wednesday.  Let's do it.  Let's bring it home.  It's about love.   Commitment.  Sharing.  Caring.  We can do this!

Ray's statement: (0.00 / 0)
Statement from New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Raymond Buckley Regarding the Overwhelming Democratic Victory in Lebanon's Special Election

White wins Lebanon Special Election by a Landslide

Chairman Buckley said of White's overwhelming victory:

"This was a landslide victory for Andy White and the Democratic Party.  Andy will be a terrific legislator-who will stand up for New Hampshire families and work with Governor Lynch to turn our economy around.

Despite the GOP's efforts to win this special election using the politics of personal destruction, the voters said loud and clear they trust the job the Democratic majority is doing to improve our economy and move New Hampshire forward.  The NHGOP plowed outside money into this race and outspent Democrats four to one in an attempt to buy this seat, but we are proud that Andy won on the strength of his ideas instead of the wealth of his campaign coffers."

I think it's time to repost (0.00 / 0)
Maggie:
In both of the two special elections held in New Hampshire in the past month, the pro-gay marriage candidate got trounced. But you haven't heard much about New Hampshire in the national news media because it doesn't fit gay marriage advocates' narrative: They claim the debate is over; gay marriage has won.

Oops.

i'm in one of those quasi-equality doemstic partnership states that you'll be sending a message of hope to tomorrow, if all goes well.  we are facing a referendum on our domestic partnership law.  every victory anywhere in the country takes a little more wind out of the sails of the anti-equality bullies.  best of luck to you all tomorrow.

Andy will vote tomorrow (4.00 / 6)
His opponent, Randy Wagoner, very graciously waived his right to a recount. Andy will be sworn in tomorrow morning at 8:30am and will speak at the rally in the morning!

I will post a diary about the election a bit later. I am unbelievably relieved at the outcome. Rarely have I been so nervous!! (Being outspent so significantly in a special election is unnerving to say the least...)

Change is inevitable, but progress is not. Working together, we can make sure that change = progress. And that's what makes us progressive...

"Randy Wagoner ... graciously waived his right to a recount" .. (4.00 / 2)
... you think maybe we could have him speak to Norm Coleman?

"We should pay attention to that man behind the curtain."

what kind of a Republican (4.00 / 1)
What kind of a Republican does Wagoner think he is?  Doesn't he know that he is expected to drag everything out as long as possible and obstruct everything the Democrats do?

Hi, Karen (0.00 / 0)
Did the swearing in go as planned this morning?  Is he going to be at the floor vote?

Great news ..... (0.00 / 0)
..... the City of Lebanon website didn't have the results as of 9:45 PM tonight; glad that I could learn of it here. Randy Wagoner spoke like a right wing candidate during the run-up - guess it didn't work.

By the way, as I wrote earlier: I got an (automated) poll telephone call from Cornerstone Research the other day - don't think it qualified as a push-poll (it wasn't so blatantly one-sided, and I'm not positive they  even asked about marriage equality) but the questions did seem like they were written to be favorable to the right.

"We should pay attention to that man behind the curtain."

Press bias, anyone?
