NH-Gov: Base vs. General on Marriage Equality

by: Dean Barker

Tue May 25, 2010 at 06:00:28 AM EDT

Instant reax at the convention:
Lynch up. (4.00 / 2)

Biggest applause of the film for Lynch is for marriage equality.
Marriage equality is by far the biggest base rouser today.

and:
More Lynch (4.00 / 1)

"rolling back progress" is what the other team wants to do.
He's talked an awful lot about the out-of-state ads targeted him.

Again, biggest applause by far is over protecting marriage equality.

and Jim Splaine's reaction:
It was great to see Jeanne Shaheen, John Lynch, and Paul Hodes all mention marriage equality -- and the loud applause they earned by doing so.  If there was ever a thought that passage of House Bill 436 would be detrimental to Democrats in November, 2010, I think we're seeing that fear dismissed day by day.

vs.

What I remember being asked about the issue of marriage equality on the phone during the highly detailed, 20+ minute Lynch message testing poll I endured last night:

Oh, well.

Adding: To be clear, none of this will make me any less enthusiastic about voting for Lynch in the fall.  He can have a statue built for himself in honor of marriage equality, or he can run away from it.  I only care that he signed the bill into law, when he didn't need to, politically speaking.  And for that he has my full support.

It would have been a continued dereliction of (0.00 / 0)
duty not to order the agents of the state to extend registration of marriage to all qualified persons (majority aged and unmarried), once the deficiency had been pointed out.  The executive's veto is not to be used as an expression of whim.  Rather, it is designed to communicate a judgment as to the practicality and legality of implementation.
As Justice Kennedy says, "the issuance of a permit is not a matter of grace."

Don't see the problem (0.00 / 0)
The marriage equality bill was one of the major events in NH during this term. I would be annoyed if they didn't test message around it, as I am a firm believer in knowing what to expect from the other side - and you know the other side has done polling themselves. Preparation is critical.

Perhaps I am being unduly opaque. (4.00 / 1)
I heard nothing in the poll about marriage equality, either in testing positive messages, or listening to the theoretical anti-Lynch oppo that was being tested.
(I wrote down a note on each question, because for the first third of the poll or so I wasn't sure if it was from a GOP candidate or some out of state hate group.)

It didn't appear from the positive campaign-y slogans that were being tested that there are any plans to campaign to the general electorate on the marriage issue.  It contrasted with the surprise I got at the convention that marriage is a huge base enthuser, which in turn might be something useful to have to highlight in a mid-term election.

Correct, Dean... (0.00 / 0)
...and wouldn't it be great if we'd have politicians who wouldn't pay big bucks in the campaign industry to hire pollsters to tell them what to say and how to say it?  I think that would be the definition of "leadership."

THEN we wouldn't need our party and our candidates to suck up to corporations and ask for their money for their campaigns.

Wishful thinking, I guess.

OHHHHH (0.00 / 0)
Duh. Sorry. Good point - why didn't message get tested?

Ummm... (0.00 / 0)
Just a wild guess here but maybe 'cause it had already been done?

2012 starts today.
