by: Dean Barker

Hey!  Didn't I see that guy captaining a ship last Saturday, with first mate Charlie Bass at his side?

(I'll have more on this later; see also Harrell's release)

Kuster Statement (4.00 / 3)
Kuster: Bass Showed True Pro-Oil Colors By Accepting Endorsement From BP Apologist Joe Barton

Texas Congressman who came to NH to endorse Bass last week became a national lightning rod today after apologizing to the CEO of BP for White House "shakedown"

CONCORD, NH - Democratic congressional candidate Ann McLane Kuster today issued the following statement about Congressman Bass's praise for pro-oil Texas Rep. Joe Barton while they campaigned together last week.  Barton today became a national controversy today for his outrageous apology to the CEO of British Petroleum.

"Congressman Bass has revealed his true pro-oil colors by praising the very Texas congressman who made an outrageous and completely inappropriate apology to the CEO of British Petroleum," said Ann McLane Kuster, who previously has served on the New Hampshire Advisory Council for the Trust for Public Lands and has been deeply involved in the environmental community in New Hampshire.

"Over his six terms in Congress, Charlie Bass voted repeatedly to expand offshore oil drilling, he called for eliminating the entire U.S. Department of Energy, he attacked the Sierra Club a so-called 'extremist'" organization, and he did everything he could to help the big oil and power companies that gave him tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions.  It should not come as a surprise that the man he called a 'great member of Congress and a good friend' just last week is now catching heat for apologizing to the CEO of BP," said Kuster.

"I could not disagree with Congressman Bass and Congressman Barton more - BP should be apologizing to America, not the other way around, and BP and its CEO must be held accountable for this horrific disaster they created.  In Congress, I will fight to enforce real accountability, end the massive kickbacks for big oil, and invest instead in the renewable energy technologies that create jobs right here in New Hampshire," said Kuster.

He has this look on his face like, "Oh, fudge.  I prepared for every contingency today, except for this, because this is, um, insane.  Do I smile?"

As Nate Silver points out, the top contributor to Barton's election campaigns (to the tune of $56,500 in PAC donations and $90,000 in individual contributions) is Anadarko Petroleum.

Anadarko has been making a lot of news lately, and none of it is good: they're a 25 percent partner in the Macondo Prospect, which was the site of the Deepwater Horizon explosion that is causing oil to spill into the Gulf of Mexico. Anadarko has also been sent a bill by BP and asked to pay its share of the cleanup costs.
