Let's Make Something Up!

Do you want to act like the NH Republican Party and make something up? Or make an affirmative statement of fact about something when we have no idea whether what we are saying is based in reality!

Example # 1: The press secretary working for John H. Sununu at the NH Republican Party. Last week, he twitterd the question of whether Carol Shea-Porter had "illegally" obtained "personal" student info from the Manchester School "Department" (it is a school district, a legal entity separate and apart from the city, and not a department of the city, but this fellow doesn't get much right), claiming that the superintendent "thinks so", with a link to a Union Leader story.  Actually, as printed in today's Union Leader, the superintendent thought there was a violation by his office,that he had received no complaints from any parents, and our congresswoman's office had not violated any law. And, as printed in today's UL, the original UL story did not contain any accusation by the superintendent that the congresswoman's office had broken any law - despite the NHGOP twittered accusation.

But did the Republican Party apoplogize for its false and misleading charges? NOOOOOOOOOO!

Instead, today the Republican Party,

is calling on U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, D-N.H., to return all personal student records she obtained from the Manchester School District.

CSP sent congratulatory letters to some graduating seniors - which means her office was given names and addresses. Rather than admit that its accusations were flat out made up and wrong, the NHGOP is doing it again, trying to mislead people into thinking that the congresswoman's office now has all sorts of "personal information" about students that it won't give up. The NHGOP has reached a level of not low, but no, credibility.

Example 2 is the way that Republican senators tried to attack Elena Kagan yesterday because she clerked for, and is an admirerer of, the late Thurgood Marshall. They repeatedly called him an "activist" justice (activist is in the eye of the holder). However, when asked last night for examples of Marshall's judicial activism:

After the hearing broke last night, TPMDC asked three of the top Republicans on the Judiciary Committee which of Marshall's opinions best exemplified his activism. And while two of the three were careful to praise Marshall the man, none of them could name a single case.

"You could name them," said Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT). Pressed, though, he could not. "I'm not going to go into that right now, I'd be happy to do that later," Hatch demurred.

In other words, three Republican senators who spoke of Marshall's "activism" did not have a single case to cite - heavens forbid that they base their assertions on some factual examples.

I can't bring myself to make up things like the NHGOP does, or to make assertions with some factual basis.  I like living in a reality based world.

The more I read from the republicans both here in NH and throughout the country the more I come to understand that reality is something that they don't understand.  It could have something to do with the fact that they have no answers.

Words don't have to mean anything to the rest of us, as long as those who are in the loop know the code.  "Judicial activism" is simply code.  
One of the reasons I dislike Manchester's politics (0.00 / 0)
is the eagerness with which supposed public servants, from the cops appearing in Ayotte commercials to the school superintendent obliquely sliming Shea Porter, jump into party politics.

Though I'll admit I can probably come up with examples elsewhere in the state, too.

In more closely observing politics in the past few years I've basically come to accept that players on all sides will accuse others of the most criminal or unforgivably horrendous things without basis.  There is extremely little honor in it but it seems to be an essential part of the sausage-making that is the political process.

Sununu's mendacious insinuation of criminal activity on CSP's part is a good example.

...But I must admit to having found my counter-example somewhat foiled!  Which I'm happy about.  I was going to mention the incident where this very web site had published unfounded accusations of involvement by the NH Tea Party movement in White Supremacist activities.  When I last looked at that post all I'd seen is that Kathy had dropped a note in mentioning it wasn't entirely substantiated, which I was going to say kudos to her for; but now I see that since the time I last looked NH Citizen's Alliance appears to have officially retracted the accusation and Dean on the part of BH added a note to that effect to the top of the article!  Way to go, guys, for displaying a nice, shiny bit of honor and responsibility there!  It had depressed me a bit to see that on BH originally.

... Nope, they beat me to that one. House minority leader Boehner called for it today.

Republicans want to reduce regulations on offshore oil drilling in the middle of the worst environmental disaster in US history!

... Beat me to it again. Marco Rubio, Piyush Jindal, Sarah Failin', all called for less regulaton after the well collapsed. And Charlie Bass' good, good friend Barton famously apologized to BP for putting them through such a terribly undeserved hassle.

Republicans are so ashamed of their own stances they won't admit them to the media!

... Nope, got me again. Ken Buck in Colorado, Sharron Angle in Nevada, Rand Paul in Kentucky, Marco Rubio in Florida, and New Hampshire's own Kelly Ayotte have all realized that every time they admit their positions on nearly any issue, their poll numbers decline.

Republicans want to eliminate government-provided healthcare benefits! So long, VA (which Carol Shea-Porter has fought so hard and well for)! So long, Medicare and Medicaid!

... Wow, really, Maine? Idaho I understand, but Maine Republicans adopting the principle of eliminating government's role in healthcare?

Republicans save tax cuts for hedge fund managers and block unemployment claims during a national economic slump!

... Yup, there goes the Senate for you. Hopefully in January they'll refuse to adopt the historical Senate rules and take out the filibuster.

Republicans endorse treason in the form of armed insurrection against the United States!

... In addition to Rick Perry in Texas, there's also Angle's quote in Nevada about 'Second Amendment remedies' and the Alabama nutjob whose solution to Republican unpopularity is 'gather your armies.'

Republicans create gaping budget holes in state balance books across the country!

... Yup, all at once, blocking $112 billion in badly-needed aid to state governments this week, including a badly-needed $48 million to New Hampshire state government. Literally tens of thousands of jobs will be lost as a direct result of Republicans blocking this bill in the Senate.

It's getting pretty darn hard to come up with a false statement that's actually any worse than what Republicans are really doing lately! I'd make a joke about them starting something with North Korea, but I'd be afraid I'd immediately see headlines reading "Sarah Palin crosses border into North Korea, is captured, Republicans demand 'rescue invasion'".

Only the left protects anyone's rights.
