Bill Binnie and Flags

by: Vis Unita Fortior

Wed Aug 11, 2010 at 20:04:16 PM EDT

(First Mahoney, then Ayotte, now Binnie.  Apparently language is the new tool with which to whip up xenophobia for election season.  Makes me really sad. - promoted by Dean Barker)

I just saw one of Bill Binnie's latest ads on TV.

"English is the language of America"

The money quote:

"Americans should have allegiance to one flag and have one official language."

Vis Unita Fortior :: Bill Binnie and Flags
Here are some pictures of Binnie driving his race car in 2007.  You may notice that there is a flag emblazoned across the front of the car.  The ol' Stars and Stripes, may the banner yet wave?

No.  That would be the Saint Andrew's Cross, the Flag of Scotland.

Here in this PDF of an article from The Vantage Point, magazine of the U.K.'s Aston Martin Owner's Club, are some photos of another car (or perhaps the same car painted slightly differently) similarly adorned as well as a photo of one external wall of the garage of Binnie Motorsports - painted with a thirty-foot-high Saint Andrew's Cross.

via Wikipedia

For any who are wondering what gives with the Scottish flag, Binnie himself is an immigrant.  He came to the U.S. from Scotland at age 5.

Can I be Official Language Czar ? (4.00 / 3)
Now that the Republicans want Big Government to determine our language itself, we need to police just what is considered "English." (After all, they are currently working on just who counts as "American.")

The easy targets are things like rendezvous, realpolitik, and frappe. Mongrelization of language. Starbucks is a problem on its own.

We'll need to establish penalties - and this is the mother tongue, the death penalty is not out of the question. We'll also have to go after the more insidious language threats: the gradual loss of standards. "Between the three of us": twenty lashes. "They will try and win, but we will stop them": six months in the reeducation camp.

Governor Palin, the lieutenant major will see you now...

First, they want in into my bedroom. (4.00 / 1)
Now my mouth.

The entire premise is so laughable, concerning a language which itself is a fairly unusual case of bastardization in the history of languages - the Germanic language of Old English, topped off with vocabularly and partial pronunciation of French.

The Modern English language wasn't pure or official on its very birthday.

I should clarify: (4.00 / 1)
What makes Modern English so unusual is that it is born from a crossover of two separate and distinct branches of the Indo-European language tree, Latin and German.  This is odd and has much to do with why one vowel can have so many different sounds depending on the word, and why our spellings are often so arbitrary-seeming.

Or, our "official" language was a mess from the get-go.

Not a mess (4.00 / 2)

He wants New Hampshire to remove all those "Bienvenue" signs, huh?

I am SO SICK by the constant pandering to the xenophobic wackos....this, following on his ad slamming China and India....

Wait a sec... (4.00 / 2)
Mr. Outsourcing has an ad about China and India?

That is very interesting.

Binnie's cencorship (0.00 / 0)
That's not all that Binnie wants removed. Include in that any hard question put to him on his Facebook page.

Last Sunday's Union Leader had an editorial asking Binnie what he was all about, in light of the conflicting positions he has taken over the years. He's running as a Republican but seems more comfortable with Democratic views.

Several posters asked him about the editorial, looking for a response.

Binnie's response: delete the postings.

Tells you a lot about Binnie.

Dus Spaling Kont? (0.00 / 0)
It's sad that we have arrived at the point that a New Hampshire candidate would try to exploit the "Be Like Us" mindset.  But what would we expect from a rich Republican who wants to buy a seat in the U.S. Capitol Building because he's become bored with his golf course?

If he starts with the 14th amendment talk (0.00 / 0)
It'll be pretty ridiculous.  A guy who wasn't born in the U. S. trying to make sure that people who were born here can't be citizens!

how come he isn't out creating jobs (0.00 / 0)
Bill Binnie made a lot of money from his business career, but (according to what he says) the money wasn't why he worked so hard.  He didn't do it for the pwoer of the prestige.  He did it (supposedly) because he has a passion for creating jobs.  His goal in life has (supposedly) been to to hire as many employees as possible.

Which raises the question: why run for the Senate now?  The cost of hiring a worker may be high but it lower than it has been in many years.  It's not likely to get much cheaper in the future.  So why is Bill running for the Senate rather than stocking up on workers?  Sure he is hiring a few staffers, but most of his money is going to radio & TV ad buys and to signage.

He has spent at least 3.5 million on his campaign.  If you figure it costs $50k to recruit a  worker and train him or her, he could have hired 70 workers for his golf course.  He could hire 36 additional employees right off the bat if he assigned an additional course ranger and an additional landscaper specifically to each hole (rather than just having a few workers cover the whole course.)  Sure, hiring more than the minimum number of workers would have made the enterprise more inefficient and hence less profitable--- but hey! he is all about maximizing PAYROLL, not profit.  Isn't that right?

Let's make this really simple... (0.00 / 0)
How is it we need to make the official language of AMERICA (named for some long-forgotten Italian or Portuguese explorer or map-maker named Amerigo)  be ENGLISH, the language of the country (England) from which we revolted  and so valiantly fought for our freedom/liberty?
Why don't we have the hutzpah to declare our own language? Pick a name!

Binnie Dual Citizenship? (0.00 / 0)
Something just occurred to me... I wonder if Binnie holds dual citizenship in both the U.S. and the U.K. and has two passports or other paperwork.  I think by default he'll technically be a British citizen, having been born there, but to fully establish your rights I think you need to do more paperwork.

It's kind of a valuable thing, these days it would provide the ability to work in any E.U. country.  I wonder if it would be important for certain financial rights.
