Ideological Purity v. Appealing to a Wide Range of Voters

by: Dean Barker

Wed Sep 08, 2010 at 19:27:18 PM EDT

The Union Leader:
"We will see if Democrats, whatever the deepest feelings of their hearts may be, decide to nominate somebody who has that ability to appeal to a wide range of voters in what is going to be a very tough year for Democrats," Swett said, "or whether there is going to be an ideological purity test."
Annie Kuster is opposed to the buildup of troops in Afghanistan. Less than a month ago, 63% of Americans polled by CNN/Opinion research said they opposed the war.

Annie Kuster is also opposed to extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest. Less than a month ago, 56% of Americans polled by CBS News said the Bush tax cuts on the wealthiest should expire.

Give it a rest, Katrina. (4.00 / 1)
Lecturing Democrats on how to win elections is not your strong suit.

"People over politics" (0.00 / 0)
Every time I hear Annie use that mindless phrase I grimace.

Mel Thomson's line was "People Above Politics."

Thats a very disappointing piece (0.00 / 0)
And will be used against us in the General. I sure hope the UL was twisting it a bit for their far right agenda.

Does not the Fire Fighters Union represent "lunch bucket" Democrats?

Seven deadly sins. (0.00 / 0)
The seven deadly sins are:

wrath
envy
sloth
lust
greed
gluttony
pride

Essentially, they are all self-enhancing instincts, a desire for more.  However, I think the reason they're called "deadly" is because, unchecked by reason, they tend to be self-defeating. Perhaps it's simply a matter of reason, the cognitive brain, being flawed.  Why else would a person who's sensing rejection by the populace, attack a person who's being accepted?  It's like Cain killing Abel because the Creator liked vegetables better than meat.
There is something very primitive going on here.

That's rich, parts I and II (0.00 / 0)
Part I: "...somebody who has that ability to appeal to a wide range of voters..." Like the "proven appeal" of someone who's never won an election?

Part II: The Union Leader, managing somehow to keep a straight face, ran a quotation complaining about "ideological purity tests." This, from the chief proponent of Pledge Politics.

The Party of No, which believes that the President (0.00 / 0)
is the incarnation of Satan, is being ideologically pure in having nothing to do with his agenda.
