GOP to Tolerance: Get Out of Our Party

by: Dean Barker

Sun Sep 19, 2010 at 06:14:07 AM EDT

This is really unbelievable:
After losing Tuesday's primary, state Rep. Anthony DiFruscia of Windham officially changed his registration from Republican to independent. "It appears as if the Republican Party is imploding," he wrote in an e-mail to legislators.

What happened?

DiFruscia, a moderate, pro-gay marriage Republican who has served in the New Hampshire House for 10 years, was targeted by the right. "I had seven mailers against me," DiFruscia said.

One mailer pictured DiFruscia as a flasher at an elementary school and another made him look like he was presiding over a gay marriage. According to DiFruscia, the senders included libertarian Republican groups in New Hampshire, the National Organization for Marriage in Washington, a right-to-work group, and a group called "New Hampshire Citizens for Truth."

I'm going to have more on the lurch rightward of the NHGOP, but for now - seven mailers against one state house candidate? Just wow.

The GOP has no conceivable reference point any longer to the principles of its founding.

Adding: It's clear from the part in bold that while Nancy Eliot may not be running, Nancy Eliot-ism is running the party. Disgraceful.

What a gift (4.00 / 3)
I can imagine a really great ad campaign: "This is how the Republican Party treats their own.  How will they treat you?"

Just the beginning (0.00 / 0)
The money spent on these will look like chicken feed compared to what they are about to do.

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

Rockingham 1 (4.00 / 1)
Republicans tried the same thing on Frank Case, using anonymous mailers.  Frank struck back with a letter in The Forum, and of the 7 Republicans in the primary, he came in second.  Since there are 5 seats he is well on the way, and outpouring of support for this really nice man from a great majority of the voters of all stripes was nice.
Now I don't agree with all of Frank's votes, and I would like to see 5 Dems take the seats, but given the make up of the district that is probably not possible.  The next best thing is to have him beat out a right-winger.  I wouldn't be surprised if this puts a crimp on the nasties attacking anyone.  They have lost a lot of credibility by attacking a popular rep and by not having the guts to put their names on their attacks.
