"Annie Kuster is proud of her record as a liberal, progressive activist for Barack Obama."

- Charlie Bass, from a press release issued today.

That's nice and everything, but six-term Congressman Bass has something Annie doesn't: his own Presidential nickname!
Bush quickly assigned nicknames to Washington players - most of them undignified, such as dubbing former New Hampshire Representative Charlie Bass "Bassmaster," a reference to a stomach-churning "Saturday Night Live" sketch.
Of course, only "Washington player"s get that kind of treatment, so Bass had a dozen years in the Village to get that token of affection from the President he fervently supported and for whose agenda he pushed at every turn.

Somebody got it wrong - (4.00 / 1)
The Saturday Night Live sketch, with pitchman Dan Ackroyd, was for the Bass-o-Matic.

It could have been the Globe reporter, and it could have been GWB, who got it wrong.

No help (0.00 / 0)
here:
Rep. Charles Bass of New Hampshire, is a long-time Bush pal who voiced hopes that he and others might yet persuade the president to sign the bill.

As is the president's habit with his acquaintances, Bush has given Bass a nickname, "Bassmaster."

But boy, does that piece remind me of something I need to post.

Bush "calls 'em as I see 'em"--people are what he sees, (0.00 / 0)
supervisually and instinctively.  Being noticed by an important person is, however, an honor and satisfying to pride.

"pride" is the deadly sin that's puzzled me.  How can it turn self-defeating?  Here's an example of how false pride -- i.e. not based on any personal achievement--can be misleading.  Bass, having been singled out by Bush, considered himself more important than he is and then he's cast aside in favor of the guitar-strumming Hodes.

Paul's got talent.  Entertainers make good politicians because they aim to make their followers feel good.

Fishing for Bass is big in the South. (4.00 / 2)
The Bassmaster is an annual tournament.  Nothing derogatory in the nickname.  A reference to Saturday Night Live is not going to go over well with people who go to church on Sunday morning and Sunday dinner after church.  Reporters are clueless, too.

Yeah, an SNL reference by Bush (0.00 / 0)
wouldn't be prudent.
