NH-Gov: The Donut King Expands his Horizons

by: Dean Barker

Sun Sep 26, 2010 at 07:20:21 AM EDT

It's time to make bundle the donuts:
[John Stephen's] latest report has a mini version right here in the Nashua area, with four company LLCs having the same post office box in Milford. Together, the group has given Stephen $10,000 for his primary and general elections.
I am surprised that this blatant abuse of the spirit of campaign finance law hasn't become an issue before now.

Does anyone have background on this happening in the past, and whether or not a loophole needs closing?

Talarico Companies (4.00 / 2)
Not everyone knows that the NH Secretary of State web site permits you to look up corporate and llc filings.  When you look at these, you will see that these entities are managed or are in some other way look to be companies of Steve Talarico, a NH businessman. And yes, I gave seen this before. When Ted Gatsas ran for mayor, a string of llc's related to a Manchester developer donated to Gatsas, iirc it was in the area of $20,000.  That developer and Talarico have been partners in at least one venture, the now defunct Manchester Wolves arena 2 football team.  They also use the same lawyer as their registered agent on a bunch of their companies. So they know how to use their separate business entities to either avoid donation limits or donate in state and local races without their names showing up in the reports.

It looks like there is a small group of business people putting up a lot of the money to get Johnny Stephen elected. Including Craig Benson, by the way.

The Craig Benson governor's portrait story (4.00 / 1)
is to me the perfectly encapsulated story of Craig Benson and NH.

Romas Brandt, 50, says he had an oral agreement that Benson would pay $12,500 for the painting. He said Benson, a Republican elected in 2002, commissioned the portrait in January 2004 and agreed to sit for preliminary photos and sketches in the lobby of his State House office a few months later.

Brandt said Benson even asked to swap his jacket and tie in the early sketches. He said Benson gave him his personal e-mail address and cell phone number, so the two could keep in touch through the process.

In May 2005, Brandt finished the portrait, took a digital photo of it, and mailed it to Benson. But then, "I got an e-mail from one of his people saying he was no longer interested, that the deal was off," Brandt told the Concord Monitor. He said he hasn't contacted Benson since.

"I was stunned," Brandt said, "especially given the time and work I had put into this."

AFAIK there is still not gubernatorial portrait of Benson in the state house.

An image of the portrait Benson never paid for can be found here.

More Bundled LLC Donations to Stephen (0.00 / 0)
For the heck of it I took a quick look at more Stephen's contributors, as the Talarico hidden $10,000 piqued my interest. I saw that Talarico Co. gave $5,000 early on, so that brings the total up to $15,000 that we know of in total from companies related to Steve Talarico.

There are another 3 llc's that have given to Stephen over the course of the campaign that use the same p.o. Box address in Windham, Forty Acres LLC, No Alibi Development, and Mashop.

And then there is the donut dough, which Stephen still hasn't explained.
