Monitor: Stephen's Claims on Parole Reforms are False

by: Pamela Walsh

Sun Oct 03, 2010 at 12:40:27 PM EDT

Please take some today to read the Concord Monitor's editorial calling John Stephen out on his misleading claims and scare tactics about New Hampshire's corrections reforms.

"The public should be insulted, not frightened, by Republican gubernatorial candidate John Stephen's shameless demagoguery. He is waging a campaign of fear in his zeal to unseat Gov. John Lynch that should not be rewarded ... Stephen knows all this, of course. But he also knows that if he can frighten people enough with his talk of rapists in the streets, he might get elected. That's unconscionable."

Another Repulbican candidate (0.00 / 0)
named Leigh McNeil in Hopkinton expressed the same mis-information in a letter to the editor in last week's Concord Monitor.

Creating fear and anxiety is a Republican campaign tool.  They have no program to offer to solve problems, so they create issues like this to scare the voters in to voting for them.  Remember Willie Horton?

NH Police Chiefs Endorse the Governor (0.00 / 0)
They were quite direct about their dislike for Johnny Stephen, and his little pen.

USUALLY RESERVED police chiefs were pretty aggressive when the subject of John Stephen came up last week.

During a press conference endorsing Gov. Lynch, several raised issues about his support for law enforcement and his truthfulness.

N.H. Troopers Association president William Graham criticized Stephen for cutting budgets for state police, including weekend work for detectives in 2003.

Graham said Lynch "puts the money where his mouth is as far as giving us what we need to protect the citizens of New Hampshire. That can't be said of his opponent."

Berlin Police Chief Peter Morency's issue with Stephen was not over inmate releases, but over a remark he made twice in a debate last month.

"I'm frustrated and it seems I'm not alone when I hear the message, 'hang in there.' To me it means, 'We'll get to you eventually,''' Morency said.

Salisbury Chief Frank Jones, imitating Stephen's move in TV ads of pulling out a veto pen, reached into his shirt pocket.

"This pen is going to vote for John Lynch on Election Day," Jones said.

Have you knocked on doors today? Have you made calls ? Have you talked to your neighbors ?

I agree with the Berlin Police Chief (4.00 / 1)
Mr. Little Pen speaks about the north country as if it were some distant land, colonized by strange and rather childish natives.
