Shea-Porter/Guinta Debate Liveblog

by: Dean Barker

Tue Oct 19, 2010 at 19:21:29 PM EDT

Apologies - a bit slow on this.  Here's a link.

I missed the first fifteen, but two items from the rest stuck with me the most:

* Guinta, who advocates for the abolishment of the Department of Energy, said (either exact quote or close): "we need to do everything we can through the regulatory process" to protect the estuary.  What now?

* Frank's solution to Facebook's leak of identity privacy is not to go on Facebook.  He'd really look out of us in DC when the next credit card company or bank does the same!

* Guinta lied at this debate about his lying at the other debate on student loans.  That's some acrobatic lying!

* Frank's approach to curing disease is to hold a bake sale.

* Frank detailed how he had to cut back the household budget during the recession.  This is the same man who just recently amended his disclosure forms to include hitherto unknown bank accounts totaling $250-$500k.

Conservatives, in addition to blaming the victim for any (0.00 / 0)
negative consequence (that's what "personal responsibility" means), believe that the morality of an action is determined by the affected person.  So, if a person consents to abuse, the behavior is not abusive.  If a person voluntarily gives anything to another person, the recipient is free to do with it what s/he wants.

Which means that if a woman voluntarily surrenders her privacy and has sexual relations with someone, that person is entitled to the enjoyment and fruits thereof.  It used to be that a woman's failure to forcibly resist being raped and having the physical injuries to prove it was adjudged to have given implied consent.

There are people who think that their desire for something creates an obligation in someone else to give it to them.  People who want to be obeyed, think others have an obligation to obey them and, if that obligation isn't met, the disobedient deserve punishment.  It's a pattern of social interaction most parents follow with very small children, presumably, if they are caring parents, to protect children from doing things that would harm them (like running into the road in front of cars).  Some parents have children because they want someone to obey them without question.  It's those people who turn into abusive parents and account for why we have so many run-away juveniles.
It seems that individuals who are lacking in self-discipline are focused on disciplining others.  This is socially re-enforced because their lack of self-discipline prompts others to provide direction and then the un-disciplined just imitate that behavior.  Then we look at them and conclude that they're hypocrites -- saying one thing and doing another.

We assume that a person who's keen on discipline (law and order) is self-disciplined.  That assumption is false.  The self-disciplined person is a liberal because he assumes others are self-disciplined, even when he can see that they're not. The rogue has disdain for the liberal and, in effect, asks, "why can't you see I'm a rogue, if you're so smart?"

After November WMUR should invest some of that money they are making in post Citizens United ad cash to improve their tech.

Free State Frank (0.00 / 0)

After the debate Bill Duncan suggested that Frank is a Free Stater.

Bill's right. Bill told me that Guinta has publicly stated that he doesn't think we need meat inspections either.

Dean--too bad you showed up too late to see the numerous Glenn Beck signs before the debate.

Of course if you like Glenn Beck you'll love Frank Guinta.

have to correct one thing (0.00 / 0)
Guinta and the rest of the health care industry (especially big pharma) have little to no interest in curing disease.  Sure, they can cure a bacterial infection, but there's little money in that.  What they want is chronic disease, which creates chronic trips to the doctor and pharmacy for expensive meds and then (hopefully) a "cure", which is probably being on a drug or two for the rest of your life.  The best thing for big pharma, and thus Frank Guinta and the rest of the GOP these companies prop up, is to have the entire country diagnosed with hypertension, type II diabetes, and typical angina.  The only incentive they have to develop cures for cancer is PR and the 10 years they can exploit patent law and sick Americans.

Right. That's why you don't make getting rid of things you don't want (0.00 / 0)
a profit center.  Profit depends on recurring revenue.  Success spells halt.  So, profit demands that the enterprise fail.

Now, there's a theme -- the tyranny of profit

How do we explain failure by design?  It's the tyranny of profit.
