The Union Leader Will Not Publish A Gay Wedding Announcement

by: Putney Swope

Fri Oct 22, 2010 at 00:04:47 AM EDT

(New Hampshire's only statewide newspaper!  Um, except it clearly isn't, as this shows. - promoted by Dean Barker)

I was afraid this was going to happen.

The Union Leader is refusing to publish the wedding announcement of two men. http://blog.kateparkerweddings... and http://slog.thestranger.com/sl... and http://www.towleroad.com/2010/...

Personally I think they are wasting their time with the UL - both the New York Times and the Boston Globe publish gay wedding announcements.

There was a small article about Judd Gregg's daughter's wedding in the New York Times the same week our civil union was featured in the Vows section. I believe the Gregg wedding was not published in the Union Leader.

Aurelio and Greg - you both deserve better than the Union Leader. May you have many years of love and happiness.

"Newspaper" (4.00 / 4)
When a newspaper business decides to not cover some stories because it doesn't like them, the people getting swindled are not so much the couples whose weddings are not covered. It is the newspaper's business's customers who paid for full news coverage and get something less, who are being defrauded.

Will the Republican effort to make same-sex marriage illegal be a big mess, because of the marriages that have already taken place? The Union Leader customer isn't aware of any such concern. What marriages??

The Union Leader: providing full coverage of Cloud Hampshire.

just to drag in an unrelated issue which is on our minds: (4.00 / 3)
The Union Leader has also refused to cover the Guinta Mystery Money story, going to the extreme of leaving it out of the accounts of the debates where Rep.  Shea-Porter referred to it.  If I recall correctly, they didn't even cover the story back when they supported someone other than Frank in the Republican Primary.

Thanks for all the fish

Well, (4.00 / 2)
Will the Republican effort to make same-sex marriage illegal be a big mess...?

Aren't Republican efforts a big mess by definition?

Their only successful efforts so far are those meant to spread fear, uncertainty, and doubt while trying to obstruct any possible effort to improve conditions for the average citizen.

Sure looks like a mess to me.

Republicans believe government is bad - then they get into office and prove it.

Better off with the Union Leader (4.00 / 3)
that they may be better off without the Union Leader--it's poor writing is accompanied by even worse graphics and of course the most blatant editorial bias I have ever seen in a newspaper.  Let's not forget that this is a paper that was once the named the Worst American Newspaper.  Still, it's obviously unfair, hateful and bigoted of the Union Leader even if it may not be illegal (which it may be).

I wish it wasn't too late at this point for the Hippo--in my opinion the state's best and most ardent critic of the UL--to print the announcement.  Sure, it's a free weekly paper and I'm not even sure they typically do announcements, but I bet they would have stepped in and provided better writing, graphics and editorial fairness than the Union Leader ever has.

Anyway, I hope they have a great time Saturday.  I hear the weather is supposed to be nice, and while the Union Leader acts like the whiny, dying brat that it is, they'll be celebrating their marriage.

Oops (0.00 / 0)
That, of course, should have read: "better off without the Union Leader"

Congratulations! (4.00 / 4)
Marriage is a wonderful path. What nice gift from the UL...being banned from there is a badge of honor. F those narrow minded anti democratic biggots.

Annie 2012!

First, Aurelio and Greg -- Congratulations! (4.00 / 4)
As a couple you seem to define "marriage" every well!

About the Onion Leader, it's unfortunate they made that decision, realizing the state of the newspaper business today, and their judgment of prejudice will eventually hurt them more than anyone else.

Fact is, as a newspaper they wrote more editorials, hateful as some were, against both Civil Unions in 2007 and then House Bill 436, the gay marriage bill, in 2009 than any other newspaper, and more than any other issue.  Their barrage made it more difficult for us to pass the bills, but we did.  They lost, we won. A nice result.

You'd think they would have learned by now.  This time -- they lost, YOU won.  Yet another failure on their part with this stupid decision not to run your announcement -- because now even more people know about your marriage, and about their confusion.
