Cornerstone's "Willie Horton" Ad

by: William Tucker

Sun Oct 24, 2010 at 16:23:53 PM EDT

In 1998, Karl Rove’s mentor, Lee Atwater, masterminded an infamous political ad that played on racial fears and portrayed Gov. Michael Dukakis as soft on crime. The Willie Horton ad featured the menacing mug shot of Horton, an African-American convicted of assault, armed robbery, and rape while out on a prison furlough. The ad was roundly condemned as racist and Atwater eventually issued a deathbed apology to Dukakis.

Histoy repeats itself in a direct mail piece attacking Gov. John Lynch. The mailer from Cornerstone Action attacks Lynch for his support of SB 500, the prison parole reform bill Cornerstone describes as "John Lynch's sex offender release bill." The mailer features Lynch in a line-up with four sex offenders, including two African-Americans and a Latino.

Why hasn't John Stephen denounced this mailer? Where's the outrage?

And our dysfunctional press now turns the other way.

So much for theories of progress. They were predicated on a functioning press.

Cornerstone's "Us vs Them" (4.00 / 2)
Criminal = Brown People.

Fear based racial profiling. See Freeloader, also.

POTUS is the subtext, thus the Democrat brand.

Cornerstone is aiming at Lynch, but they are using scattershot trying to injure as much of the ticket as they can.

Dante adorns the hypocrites in religious garb--hooded cloaks similar to the elegant ones worn by the Benedictine monks at Cluny (in France)--in accordance with the biblical condemnation of false piety: just as Jesus compares hypocritical scribes and Pharisees to tombs that appear clean and beautiful on the outside while containing bones of the dead (Matthew 23:27), so the bright golden cloaks of Dante's hypocrites conceal heavy lead on the inside (Inf. 23.64-6).

When I was growing up and going to HS in the mid and late 60's, the discussion in America on Education Funding was still about how much more we would spend.
Then came Ronald Reagan and Proposition 13 in California
Now the discussion in America on Education Funding is about how much less we will spend. Great societal moves forward by India and China on the World stage can be viewed a result of direct aid to education. We are going backward in the states in our core competencies, and its just easier to get ideas from TV without having to work hard, read or check it out.

Proposition 13 drew its impetus from 1971 and 1976 California Supreme Court rulings in Serrano v. Priest,Serrano[›] that a property-tax based finance system for public schools was unconstitutional.

In the name of elderly Californians who were supposedly losing their homes due to rising property taxes to build and support schools, they limited the State's ability to tax real estate to 1% of its value, and allowed an increase comparable with an inflation adjuster. In effect it cut school funding,by limiting tax rates, and as we learned here, towns with higher property values were able to fund their schools with a lower tax rate, which was found to be fundamentally Unconstitutional. Reagan rode the wave all the way to the White House because he was able to merge the social conservatives and the economic conservatives into a coalition. Why they even tried to close the Dept. of Edumacation. They are still trying.

note to close readers: this might be sarcastic so think twice before reading to candidates for use in their attacks on each other

Some people prefer power to success. Power, to be felt, has to hurt. (0.00 / 0)
That's why we have had and continue to have increasing deprivation of rights under cover of law.  You could say that justice has been hijacked and authority has taken its place.  The rule of law is more implacable than any flesh and blood tyrant.

"law and order" = use laws to impose orders

Would Cornerstone support raising taxes to balance a budget that didn't do things like this?

Didn't think so.

As it does every year, CQ rated New Hampshire the safest state in the union in 2010.

Presumably, "Cornerstone" refers to the John Hagee church in (0.00 / 0)
San Antonio -- a family enterprise that's part of the merging of religion with political activism, taking advantage of establishments of religion being immune to state supervision.  Hagee and Deal Hudson and a whole bunch of social conservatives are all intent on gaining power and influence.
http://www.clnfi.org/

The major thrust is still abortion and authoritarian marriage and that's probably why they have John Lynch in their sights.  The Willie Horton approach probably struck them as having more potential, since all our Governor did was sign what a very large legislative body passed.
Conservatives focus on the importance of "leaders" because a few leaders, like local government, are easier to subvert and control than the whole nation.  Governors are perceived as "levers of power" rather than public servants.

actually... (4.00 / 1)
Cornerstone is a rightwing lobbying group in Concord, NH.  They spearheaded the fight against marriage equality.  Although they are a small group who normally operate on a fairly small budget, in 2010, they are laundering few dozen kilobucks of other groups' outside money to run anti-freedom TV and radio spots.
