Open Thread: Shared Sacrifice - Yes We Can!

by: Dean Barker

Mon Nov 15, 2010 at 06:04:23 AM EST

The top 1 percent of American earners took in 23.5 percent of the nation's pretax income in 2007 - up from less than 9 percent in 1976. During the boom years of 2002 to 2007, that top 1 percent's pretax income increased an extraordinary 10 percent every year. But the boom proved an exclusive affair: in that same period, the median income for non-elderly American households went down and the poverty rate rose.
I think the most important thing right now is making sure that 1% continues to have the tax giveaways they enjoyed under Decision Points George.  They clearly need more time to turn that bonanza into jobs for the rest of us.

But we're America, gosh darn it. I want to go further. Do we, the Other 99%, have the can-do spirit in us needed to get the One Percenters to enjoy a full one-quarter of all American wealth?

I for one will not rest until 1% of our population earns 1 of every 4 dollars. If it means some of the money I've been putting into Social Security for decades not coming back to me on the other end, if it means skyrocketing deficits for my children and grandchildren, so be it.  I know Judd's with me on this - who else?

This is an Open Thread.

What was the discussion at the roots unconference (0.00 / 0)
about the role of the Free Keene folks in the election? I saw a couple of tweets but couldn't understand the points or questions...

the discussion was (0.00 / 0)
that they are for real, solidly in  Keene...they worked hard to elect their candidates and many were successful(IIRC).
They also have a major stake in Grafton County.

Another thing (0.00 / 0)
to thank Craig Benson for.  Imagine if these out-of-state interlopers reading into New Hampshire what they wanted had waited another year or two to make a selection of a state to hoist their beliefs on.  I doubt that with Lynch and an allegedly pinko legislature we'd have been subjected to their invasion.

[ Parent ]
Not sure its all that important (4.00 / 2)
but know that the Free Keene folks are a bit fringe from the rest of the Free State movement.

Gee, I don't think that's true. (0.00 / 0)
One Free Keene activist ran for state rep in the Democratic primary here and lost. I'm not aware of any electoral victories in the area.

But again, no mention of winning any local elections n/t (0.00 / 0)

I think your sacrifice is not enough (0.00 / 0)
to make this work, so I would add that we probably will have to cut education funding and Latin will definitely not make the cut.  And good luck finding another job, since the greater the inequality of income the worse the economy will perform.  I suggest you bone up on cutting your own wood, and how to sneak it off someone else's land in the dark,  Learn to poach wild game, grow some veggies, potatoes would be good, but watch out for the blight that is expanding with climate change.

Why I am I thinking about Robin Hood?

Schumer suggest rasing the limit to one million $ (0.00 / 0)
we still get "the millionaires and billionaires",  2% make over over 250,000, and 1% make over 500,000. Its still a crapload of tax dollars to forgo and then have to borrow to make up the difference in deficit spending.

Interesting piece re: the Olbermann donation. I've only skimmed it, but I plan to make popcorn for my full reading.

NH Schools Share the Sacrifice (0.00 / 0)
The Joint Legislative Fiscal Committee is having a hearing today on what to do with Education Stimulus money that was supposed to be used to save teachers jobs not fund the General Fund.

This afternoon the joint legislative Financial Committee will discuss replacing state tax dollars in the school aid system with the federal funds. It would then distribute $20 million in extra school aid from freed-up state funds and keep the other half for the state's coffers.

Progress? (0.00 / 0)
Mark Udall heard a warning shot from the voters.

"In the last election, voters said, 'Please work together.' I think they're going to move next to profanities," said Sen. Mark Udall (Colo.), a member of the Class of 2008.

I recognize that it could also be "preemptive excuse-making," and an effort by "junior senators" starts way behind. But for now I choose optimism.

Sacrificing humans is a barbaric custom. (0.00 / 0)
Jesus aimed to put an end to it once and for all.  Self-sacrifice by people who have been duped is despicable, regardless of how many medals are handed out.

God said to Abraham etc (0.00 / 0)
In the Abraham tradition, the story of the binding of Isaac can be seen as metaphor for the end of human sacrifice. G-d tested Abraham, but ultimately did not want Abraham to make his son a sacrifice. God wanted a covenant people to whom to give the Law, someone just to trust. Abe passed the test.

In return for trust in God, Abraham's people were to be as numerous as grains of sand in the sea.

The convenant requires circumcision of all men and has continued till this day. Animal sacrifice to the priests continued until the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem.

http://judaism.about.com/od/ab... once King Solomon completed and dedicated the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, animal sacrifices were offered only in the Temple. It would be a sin to offer sacrifices in any other place. And once the Temple was destroyed in 70 CE, no more animal sacrifices were offered.

Victor Havl on Hope: (0.00 / 0)
"Hope...is not the same as joy that things are going well, or willingness to invest in enterprises that are obviously headed for early success, but, rather, an ability to work for something because it is good, not just because it has a chance to succeed.  Hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out."

I knew that - (0.00 / 0)
thanks for the tip.  Had to manually type from a magazine and my brain played tricks.  Such is life.

Sorry Vaclav.
