Shaheen Calls Out GOP Obstructionists on DADT

by: Dean Barker

Thu Nov 18, 2010 at 21:56:41 PM EST

Jeanne Shaheen was one of the senators present in Lieberman's press conference today when he claimed to have the votes to repeal DADT.

She minced no words about the Party of Never strategy of McCain and others in blocking a DADT repeal that is broadly popular in and out of the military:

Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Democrat of New Hampshire, said that the demands for a fair amendment process were simply cover for efforts by Mr. McCain and others to block repeal of the policy.

"This is not about how many amendments are we going to do, or how long we are going to debate," Ms. Shaheen said. "This is about those who oppose this policy wanting to kill it and taking every opportunity they can and using the Senate rules to do that. That's exactly what is going on."

If you want to know how duplicitous McCain has been on DADT, look no further than here.

I do hope on January 3rd, when she becomes our Senior Senator, (0.00 / 0)
that Jeanne Shaheen begins to receive as much reverence and attention for her brilliant yankee maverickness as our current Senior Senator.

Our military is the last bastion of legal involuntary servitude (0.00 / 0)
and DADT is a central component.  It embodies the premise that when a person consents to being abused (by volunteering for military service), there is no abuse -- a premise that's also operative in the determination that an arrested person has to demand legal representation and affirmatively refuse to speak in order to have his/her rights to counsel and non-self-incrimination respected.  And, it's all part and parcel of the position that the moral value of an act is determined by the reaction of the object of the act, rather than on the basis of an independent standard of justice.  In other words, our agents of government aren't depriving us of personal rights, if we don't object to being deprived.  Foreign nationals, not being cognizant of their legal rights, are plain out of luck.  As are Americans who can't afford legal advice and don't understand that consent, once given, is deemed to be permanent.

The extent to which subjective responsibility for actions has been effectively denied is really quite marvelous to behold.  Authority without responsibility is the conservative ideal.  Of course, an authoritarian like John McCain is opposed to a change.

Proud (0.00 / 0)
That she is my Senator.

We Need An Intervention (0.00 / 0)
Senator McCain is obviously becoming delusional.  Maybe it's time for the home?  Wake up America!
