Hang Onto Your Hats: Students Visit Planned Parenthood Health Center in Manchester

by: Planned Parenthood of Northern New England

Wed Jun 13, 2007 at 17:23:33 PM EDT

I'm still unclear about why this is a story, but here we go. Anti-choice groups in New Hampshire are up in arms that a group of students recently visited a Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) health center as part of a tour highlighting community prevention resources for at-risk teens in Manchester.

I cannot understand why it is controversial to provide teens with information and services that prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Yet the story has become such a controversy that the city school board voted to launch an investigation. So what exactly are the anti-choice groups up in arms about?

According to Darlene Pawlik, president of New Hampshire Right to Life, the students were "exposed" to the abortion issue. As I mentioned earlier, the purpose of this visit was to provide a brief presentation to these at-risk kids focused solely on preventive health like birth control, pap smears and testing for STIs. The question burning in my mind is, "How does this expose them to abortion?" According to Pawlik, "There were protesters outside with signs saying 'Babies Killed Here.'"

So these kids were "exposed to abortion" because of the anti-choice protesters outside of the Planned Parenthood clinic. Great argument, Pawlik.

But let's get back to the real issue. This is just another attempt by anti-choice groups to attack Planned Parenthood. And the claims couldn't be further from the truth.

There are more than 860 Planned Parenthood health centers across the country that are providing critical medical and preventive health care services to women, teens, and families every day. And Planned Parenthood of Northern New England health centers are no exception. During the past several years, PPNNE has spearheaded programs that get parents talking with their kids about sexual health and relationships. They have held professional training programs on the teenage brain. They have organized house parties that give parents the opportunity to talk with each other about the issues their kids are facing. They co-sponsored the first annual Parent Expo in Manchester ? an event that featured more than 30 booths with information about parenting and growing up.  PPNNE provides a safe and supportive environment that provides teens and parents with the skills and health care they need. And that should be the end of the story.

When I was in High School (0.00 / 0)
my health class had to take a trip to the local clinic so we could get a demonstration in how to use a condom.  This was undoubtedly in part to 'right to life' activists.

Maybe if they didn't try to gut sex education in schools, teens wouldn't have to leave the classroom to learn about their sexual health.

And, they wouldn't have to be exposed to the hate of right to life groups.

Disappointed (0.00 / 0)
I'm very disappointed that both the school district and the YMCA caved to the right to life people like there was something wrong with going to Planned Parenthood. What was wrong was the right to life people accosting the kids on the filed trip.  The president of the YMCA did not stand behind his staff at all, instead he is having an "internal investigation". Give me a break.  If I were a member, I would quit in disgust.

Which YMCA? (0.00 / 0)
I assume Manch?

For clarification (where none may be needed), all YMCA's are independent organizations and operate with little central control.

what would be the equivalent "right wing" field trip to be alarmed about?

LET'S SPEAK UP! (4.00 / 1)
I think the students were treated fairly and need to be exposed to Planned Parenthood's many services, the least of which is abortion.  I would guess that numerous parents and citizens of Manchester, if not the overwhelming enlightened majority, see absolutely no problem with this trip.  If said "overwhelming enlightened majority" doesn't speak out in favor of this sane. practical exposure for at-risk students (not withstanding the protesters), then the vocal minority (read: NH Right to Life, Union Leader, School Board Member Kruse) will continue to push their antiquated message against PPNNE.  I'm so sick of hearing them speak as if they're righteous and in the majority.  They're neither.

neither moral nor majority (0.00 / 0)
reminds me of this snippet from the 1992 L7 song "Pretend We're Dead"

Turn the tables with our unity,
They're neither moral nor majority.
Wake up and smell the coffee,
or just say no to individuality

I'm just filled with lyrical references tonight...
