Metal Detectors Cost Shea-Porter the Election

by: Dean Barker

Thu Jan 13, 2011 at 20:07:28 PM EST

Drew Cline:
In 2009, Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, D-N.H., also received threats. She responded by holding constituent meetings in federal buildings. People had to pass through metal detectors to get in, and armed officers were present in the rooms and hallways. When people got angry at her because they perceived she wasn't listening, she literally erected barriers between herself and the people. A year later, she lost re-election.
Thank god Carol Shea-Porter, who made herself widely available during her four years in Congress, didn't listen to opinions like this during the height of Sarah Palin's "death panels" and the health care bill insanity.

Despite candidate Frank Guinta's attempts to profit off of her legitimate safety concerns.

Metal detectors are a barrier? (4.00 / 1)
An annoyance, sure, but a barrier?

Two years ago, when I gathered with two million of my closest friends to observe a Presidential inauguration, we didn't find that the metal detectors were a barrier.  Crowd control fences, maybe, but not metal detectors.

remember the 8/09 Bash at Hermanos? (4.00 / 2)
We publicized it here for a month, and in the interimthe Health Care ruckus and Birther bs ramped up...I got quite concerned...I spoke with Rep.Hodes staff, told them my concerns and asked if the capitol police were increasing security...I was told there really was no security back in the districts so I called the Concord PD and spoke with the chief. He really appreciated knowing that we were having an event in his city with Carol and Paul and offered to have enhanced drive bys and I was okay with that. The tea partiers showed up outside and picketed on the sidewalk. I stayed downstairs by the door, so that if anyone unknown to me showed up, they would be engaged to see what they said about their reason for being there. Two kids, one of whom blogs here and started a Republican PAC last week tried to sneak by with obvious bulges in their pockets. Upon questioning, they revealed signs stuffed into the back of their pants which were less then felicitous toward our Representatives. They were asked to go to the street. I will say that they acted chastened and went outside after complaining about freedom etc. I told them it was a closed party and they were disinvited.
pual to his credit went to the sidewalk and engaged with the crew there. One guy started yelling at him, calling him a baby killer and was poking him in the chest. He took it with a smile.

note to close readers: this might be sarcastic so think twice before reading to candidates for use in their attacks on each other

There were many threats to Carol and Staff (0.00 / 0)
Carol had an event in Raymond during her first term. Raymond is my home town so of course I was there. The event brought together people who provided services of all types in Rockingham County. From social services to banks.

The zanys were there in force. Some from out of state. Some were there because of immigration ) I asked a guy who got in my face what he was so angry about. He finally told me it was about illegal aliens coming over the Border from Mexico.

This crowd was red faced and acted out both inside and out. They were incredibly rude to the people making presentations too.

I walked Carol out to her car that day. I was angry that it took place in the town where I grew up.

This turned out to be typical unfortunately.

The object of the intimidation is to frighten ordinary (0.00 / 0)
people.  When they witness an important person, who's entitled to respect, being threatened, they become fearful and inclined to distance themselves.

Extortion comes in many flavors.  Depriving citizens of their inclination to participate in governing is one way to extract power from the people.  It's one of the things money poured into campaigns buys.

Guinta was obviously recruited by people who consider politics a blood sport in which factions exist to be pitted against each other like dogs or cocks.

"What's also shameful (4.00 / 1)
is Cline's conclusion that assassination is a normal and acceptable risk of public service."  It would seem that this is true in this country today.  And it also seems that it is OK that 9 year old children who are interested in their government can be shot at public gatherings, and then any complaint is spun as an attack on a woman who boasts of shooting wolves from airplanes.  What a strange planet I suddenly inhabit!
