Speak Out Against Legislative Assault on Education

by: Kathy Sullivan 2

Thu Jan 20, 2011 at 07:21:37 AM EST

The House Committee on Education is holding a hearing next week on the bill to take arts, health, world languages and technology education out of the definition of an adequate education:

HB39
Session Year 2011
  Bill Docket
  Bill Status
Bill Text    Title: relative to the adoption of the common core state standards in New Hampshire and relative to the substantive content of an adequate education.
G-Status: HOUSE
House Status: IN COMMITTEE
Senate Status:
Next/Last Comm: HOUSE EDUCATION
Next/Last Hearing: 01/25/2011 at 10:30 AM    LOB 207

This is the same bill that prohibits the Dept. Of Education from  adopting the national common core standards being promoted by the National Governors Association without legislative approval. Given the reckless actions of this legislature so far, do we really want them making curriculum decisions? If you can not make the hearing, please call your rep or write a letter. And please spread the word, I am told  that the Manchester Education Association has not alerted its membership, so I don't know whether notice of the hearing has gone out to all the people who should know about it.

Fosters has a story about this bill, and a similar bill, both of which are being heard next week.  That is, assuming this is a public hearing, and not just an "ing". This is all about money, and has nothing to do with education or children. One would hope the legislature would base decisions regarding education on sound education policy. But not this legislature! It isn't even good business sense, people don't want to live in a state with bad schools, and companies don't want to locate in states that don't have an educated workforce.

It seems we have a long history of legislative fixation on minutiae. (0.00 / 0)
Happened upon the following by chance in connection with one Samuel Peters, whose screeds provided fodder for misinformation for more than a century.  Thought you might enjoy it.

Funny there is no FN attached to the bill (0.00 / 0)
This bill changes the definition of what an adequate education is. At a rough guess, by eliminating technology, languages, arts, and health edit would reduce the number of hours of education required (and its cost) by 15-20%. I think that would be around $100-125 million (someone else might have better numbers than this) but in any case it would be a huge decrease in state adequacy aid.

So why isn't this estimated in the bill?

My letter (4.00 / 3)
Dear Representatives O'Brien, Condra, and Holden :

First, thank you for your public service.

I am writing to you today to let you know that I do not support HB 39, which has its first public hearing by the House Education committee next Tuesday January 25.

House Bill (HB) 39, if passed, will remove Technology Education, Health Education, World Languages, and Arts Education from the current criteria for a "substantive" and "adequate" education for students in New Hampshire.

I do not believe that the public will support this attempt to cut school services so drastically at the state level.  The potential ramifications to our children's education are not acceptable, and I ask you to do what you can to defeat this measure.

Rep. Holden, as I see you are the Vice- Chair of the Science, Tecnhnology and Energy Committee, I would like to know how you expect the students of NH to continue to excel in these areas and promote the creation of jobs in the science and technology sectors without an adequate education in these areas.

Speaker O'Brien, I implore you, as a mother of 2 school-aged children, that you consider the ramifications that bringing this bill forward will have on our schools and the disparities it will created between school districts seated in towns without wide tax bases.  Your caucus has pledged to focus on the economy and job creation like a laser beam, passing this bill will not contribute to this goal, but will instead hamper our states ability to create jobs in the long-term.

Feeling hopeful since 2004...

Excellent! (4.00 / 2)
And thank you!  The education of children is critical to the future of our state.
