Frank Guinta Rides In On the Tea Party Express

by: William Tucker

Sat Feb 05, 2011 at 06:00:00 AM EST

The U.S. House schedule provides representatives with one week a month to spend in their districts. Rep. Frank Guinta spent his in the Granite State burnishing his Tea Party credentials.

In Rochester (Jan. 31):

Asked if he favored doing away with the Federal Reserve Board, Guinta said, "I would support eliminating the Fed."

A standard Tea Party screed. Let's abolish the central bank and take away the government's ability to control the money supply to fight unemployment and inflation and moderate business cycles. Hey, the Great Depression wasn't all that bad.

In Laconia (Feb. 3):

Guinta sidestepped a question about investigations into whether the president was an American citizen.

So much for leadership. But Guinta has to treat Birthers delicately. To be taken seriously in Washington, he can't embrace them -- but he can't denounce them either, they're his base.

"I wasn't sent to Washington to raise the debt ceiling."

Nor to favor ideology over reason. Even Speaker John Boehner says it will mean "financial disaster" for the global economy if Congress fails to raise the debt ceiling.

How does Frank really approach the debt ceiling issue? (0.00 / 0)
Depends on who he is speaking to, it appears:

At the Laconia Town Hall:

As to the possibility of raising the current federal debt ceiling, he said he has been studying the matter closely. Not raising the ceiling, he said, might raise fears about America's ability to pay its debt which might have a negative impact on the stock and credit markets.

At the 912 meeting:

Guinta then discussed the country's debt, and said ""I wasn't sent to Washington to raise the debt ceiling."

The alternative to debt is theft. (0.00 / 0)
To recognize a debt is to acknowledge and obligation to give back for what one has got.  Conservatives prefer to take without giving, to rule without serving.  So, of course, they reject the very idea that they must pay what they owe.

It may seem a good idea in the abstract, but sending deadbeat dads to Washington is foolish.

When politicians take money from corporations and then claim not to represent them or owe them favors, they're either lying or untrustworthy.
