NH Republicans Continue the Attack on NH Children

by: Mike Hoefer

Mon Feb 07, 2011 at 13:17:10 PM EST

Republican lawmakers continue to do their best to make sure the the common-folk of NH are undereducated.

House Bill 631 would REPEAL the requirement that all school districts offer Kindergarten. The Committee hearing is tomorrow Tuesday Feb 8th, and House vote is scheduled in the House on Thursday.

So when we add HB631 to HB0036 which would remove Arts, Languages, Health, and  Technology Education from the definition of educational adequacy what do we get?

You get a state that will be actively working to discourage families with children from living here, and, from that seemingly innocuous outcome the whole state and and its economy quickly finds itself in a very bad place.

Hey, Mike (0.00 / 0)
We could become a gated community of rich retirees, like The Villages in FL.  Can a whole state survive that way?

No, Florida survives by providing refuge for recent retirees. (0.00 / 0)
When the elderly become dependent, there are no social services.  So, they move back to where they came from.
Last year was the first when more people left Florida than moved in.

We already are among the "oldest" states (0.00 / 0)

FL median age = 39.3
NH median age= 39.2

(just realized I'm on the old half of that line up!)

And you have at least 2 bills that roll the age you can leave school... (4.00 / 2)

... back to 16. That was good enough in 1920, so it's good enough today.

At least there is one bright spot- a bill that requires kids to have at least 45 minutes of physical education per day. That'll get them prepared for good, honest occupations for the 21st century like trapping, log splitting, maple sugar harvesting, hunting and fishing guide, and lumberjacking.

would love to up date the diary with those if you have them handy.

Here you are... (0.00 / 0)

HB429, an act  permitting a child 16 years of age or older to withdraw from school with parental permission. ,

HB542 an act that does assorted bad or dumb things.

The phys-ed bill is HB377

Look, government is supposed to a punitive entity. (0.00 / 0)
You know, to impose discipline.  Providing a liberal education isn't just expensive, but counter-productive.
Conservatives believe in extraction, including obedience.  Sharing nature's bounty and man's assets is not part of their agenda.  Indeed, natural resources are to be extracted, not preserved, and certainly not to be protected.

The ideology is entirely consistent.  They've evolved predation to practice it at a distance.

Lets put on a show! (0.00 / 0)
Perhaps the majority would like the town folk to have a fundraiser to raise money for education!!  We can put on a show!!  And sell refreshments at the show!! And in honor of the Speaker, it can be A Little Night Music.

Bake sales (0.00 / 0)
for teachers' salaries.  Fund-raisers (selling tulip bulbs and chocolate and etc.) for books.  How much can we buy?  Wouldn't that end up being just as expensive as paying taxes, though?

Right/Wrong Direction? (0.00 / 0)
And WMUR/Andy Smith put out a poll today showing that 69% of respondents believe NH is headed in the right direction, only 25% wrong direction.

No'm Sayn?

Do we deserve to have the First Primary if we don't have Kindergarten? (4.00 / 2)
I'm afraid we don't.

NH is no longer representative of this country.

Gov. Lynch Opposes Attempt to Repeal Public Kindergarten

CONCORD - Gov. John Lynch today made clear his opposition to legislation aimed at once again making New Hampshire the only state in the nation that does not provide access to public kindergarten to every child.

The House Education Committee today heard testimony on House Bill 631, relative to repealing the requirement that all school districts offer public kindergarten. The legislation further exempts some school districts, which opt not to move forward with plans to implement kindergarten, from repayment of state funds they received for the purpose of adding kindergarten.

"The independent research is clear about the importance of kindergarten to the education of our children and the contribution it makes to ensuring later academic success," Gov. Lynch wrote to the committee. "By ensuring all of our children have the opportunity to attend kindergarten, we are laying the foundation for success, and providing an equal opportunity for all students to begin their education on sure footing."

Gov. Lynch in 2007 signed into law the definition of an adequate education, which made it clear that all children should have the opportunity to attend public kindergarten. Up until passage of that law, New Hampshire was the only state in the country that did not provide every child the opportunity to attend public kindergarten.

"I believe that education is the opportunity we provide all our children to have better lives and better futures. This opportunity should begin with kindergarten," Gov. Lynch wrote. "I urge you to continue to support access to public kindergarten for all New Hampshire children."

A copy of the Governor's letter is attached.

February 8, 2011

The Honorable Michael Balboni

Chairman, House Education Committee

Legislative Office Building, Room 207

33 North State Street

Concord, NH 03301

Dear Chairman Balboni and Members of the Committee:

I believe that our children are the future of our state.  They are our future elected officials, our future first responders, CEOs and educators.

As Governor, I have worked tirelessly, to improve the opportunities we are providing for our children to receive a quality education.  I believe we have made significant progress in meeting that goal.

In 2007, for the first time, the state defined an adequate education - a definition that includes Kindergarten. The independent research is clear about the importance of kindergarten to the education of our children and the contribution it makes to ensuring later academic success.  By ensuring all of our children have the opportunity to attend kindergarten, we are laying the foundation for success, and providing an equal opportunity for all students to begin their education on sure footing.

I believe that education is the opportunity we provide all our children to have better lives and better futures.  This opportunity should begin with kindergarten.  I urge you to continue to support access to public kindergarten for all New Hampshire children.

                                                                       Sincerely,

                                                                       John H. Lynch

                                                                       Governor
