Another Day at the State House Circus

by: William Tucker

Thu Apr 07, 2011 at 06:00:00 AM EDT

With his Republican party imploding in the wake of the D.J. Bettencourt "pedophile pimp" scandal, GOP Chairman Jack Kimball stepped in and tried to rein in the wayward lawmakers.

“Many of our State Representatives seem to have lost sight of the bigger picture and what Republicans were elected to do.

Speaker Bill O'Brien, perhaps stung by the implicit criticism, refused to even acknowledge that Kimball was referring to his Republican charges.

“Well I think the Democrat are distracted from the legislative accomplishment that we’ve achieved, and I take the press release as speaking to them.”

Well, that sounded good to Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt.

“I think you got your answer. I think you got your answer.”

Kimball was not amused.

“I am talking about all state reps and that it is clear. There is nothing in there that says Republican state reps or Democrat state reps, I said them all.”

"We’ve got to get back to the business of governing and I think that right now a lot of that focus has been deterred, if you will, by all of the discussion of the Catholic Church and what have you.”

Nully Is Nullifying (4.00 / 1)
If he can nullify federal acts, in his own mind, of course he can nullify his party chair - in his own mind!

Campaign theme song (4.00 / 3)
Perfect campaign theme song for their 2012 defeat:

The "Imperial March" from Star Wars, played on a circus calliope.

Anarchy has unintended consequences (4.00 / 3)

This is what happens to organizations that don't recognize any social fabric. When they are finally in positions of power the bankruptcy of their ideas start showing up in all sorts of strange ways.

They are unravelling and to quote the Beatles, "I feel fine."

Bada bing... (0.00 / 0)
The Speakah operates like the TV gang from Jersey. he may be better educated, but his Soprano-like fist is the same.

Quandt call for exorcism (4.00 / 3)
From Pindell, quoting Lee Quandt's blog:

"I wanted to know if the Vatican takes credit cards. The reason for this is, to show that I am a real republican, would see how much it would cost to have the house leadership (collectively) exorcised to drive the demons out of the state house," wrote Lee Qundt, an Exeter Republican, on his blog.

Coalition Collapse. (4.00 / 1)
Every major newspaper in the state has castigated these clowns.  Zany Sideshow, Deaf, Boorish band of politicians - it's almost as if The Onion has become the source of news in NH.

Now we're seeing Republicans (real ones) begin to awaken to the Faustian bargain struck with the Tea Party.  Not only in NH but also in DC (as an aside, I thought Boehner looked like someone was sticking needles in his eye during his brief statement last night after negotiations at the WH).

The call for exorcism is brilliantly funny.  I share almost none of Rep. Quandt's political views, but I admire his principled stance on several of these issues and his sharp sense of humor.

Faustian (0.00 / 0)
What a dreadful fate, to sell one's soul to such a tawdry bunch as the 21st century Tea Party.

The historic and iconic revolt against (0.00 / 0)
corporate power and corporate tax cuts has been "co-opted".  The teahadists have fallen through the looking glass - what was up is now down - and wage economic war on the working class.

The good news, as Hartmann points out, the Tea Party musters 32% support among Americans, while a whopping 47% reject them, and, apparently, 21% don't care enough about them to have an opinion (is this worse than rejecting them?).
