GOP REP: Do you want the gun first or the ID?

by: HarrellKirstein

Fri May 06, 2011 at 17:03:51 PM EDT

(Thank you for highlighting this. The League of Women Voters believes the only result of this bill will be to intimidate or harass people so much that they will not feel able to exercise their Constitutional right to vote. - promoted by William Tucker)

Wednesday, House Republicans voted to infringe on New Hampshire citizens' right to vote.  But as they entered the State House, a group of concerned New Hampshire citizens asked the reckless state legislators to present a state issued photo ID before they voted.

One Rep responded by waving a wad of cash, and another asked which the voter wanted first, "the gun or the ID."

A video of the GOP Representatives' reactions is available here:

(Posted by Harrell Kirstein, press secretary for the New Hampshire Democratic Party.)

Nice work. (0.00 / 0)
The look on their faces at being asked to show ID is priceless.  Continues the perception they've generated since January that there are two classes of citizens in NH; GOP House Reps and everybody else.

Who is the rep who thought it would be funny to "joke" about pulling a gun instead of ID?  I wonder what his constituents would think of that.

That Looks (0.00 / 0)
a lot like Brandon Guida. It sounds more like a poor attempt at humor than any threat.

Sure, I voted for less government and less government spending...just NOT the parts that I benefit from!

The female rep who appears starting at the 1:10 mark is Susan DeLémus, who was one of the architects of the amendment which passed on May 4th.

love the guy (0.00 / 0)
with the wad of cash. Stereotypes DO have a basis in reality.

Far funnier his comment: (0.00 / 0)
"In God we trust, all others pay cash."

But it seems nobody but me found that funny enough to note.

And for the record, when asked, I showed my name badge and my security pin, which (gasp) is in fact my legislative ID, and if need be, I'd have backed it up with (gasp) my legislative photo ID (taken by the DMV using their equipment).

Some of my comments are getting marked as trolls by elwood and others and disappear as a result.  Look for the hidden comments and win a prize.

Really? (4.00 / 3)
If that is the case, I can vote on the House floor by wearing one of my name badges and pins? Really?

Do you have a valid 2011-12 session photo ID? (0.00 / 0)
Besides which, while it would be fun to have you on the floor to argue with, I'm not sure you'd enjoy it very much.

Thank you for giving me such a big laugh this morning.

Seth You have become obnoxious (4.00 / 3)

Your a troll here. I'm ok with that, because people like me with years of investment in this state can have a go with you.

You and your movement have proven that you will do anything to undermine the NHDP. If that means suppressing the votes of Students then you'll do it.

But if you can't show some respect for Ray and People I work with shoulder to shoulder, kindly go back to whence you came.

[ Parent ]
I was being respectful... (0.00 / 0)
Not sure what you're reacting to, here.

1) I was having a polite conversation with Ray.  I've tried to be respectful and polite always, and when I've lapsed, I've tried to apologize promptly.

2) 'do anything to undermine the NHDP'?  No, I'm not trying to undermine the NHDP, we openly disagree on a large variety of issues, 'undermine' implies something far different. In order to undermine, you need to be part of something, on the inside.

3) I'm not for suppressing anyone's voting, and so far, it seems like the proposed solutions are worse than any problems they would try to solve.

Argue, or debate? (0.00 / 0)
Which one do you thin sounds more dignified/befitting a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives?

[ Parent ]
If the Free Staters knew anything (4.00 / 1)
about NH they would know that House Rules demand that you address the Speaker with your remarks not argue or debate but then again runaways often don't know where they ended up.

[ Parent ]
While I know that... (0.00 / 0)
To nitpick on my choice of a single word ('argue'), in what was a lighthearted reply, seems a bit much.
'debate' would have been as valid a word, and yes, addressing the Speaker is the proper form, though I suspect you'd have even less fun dealing with him.

is that supposed (4.00 / 1)
to excuse your support for the nanny/fascist state ID bill?

[ Parent ]
I didn't support it... (4.00 / 1)
I voted against it... I voted for the one amendment of Pierce's, I liked, and against the main amendment and the bill itself.

Good (4.00 / 1)

You voted against it.

But fellow Free Stater Susan Delumas instigated this.

But your snark has worn thin.

To wit:

"And for the record, when asked, I showed my name badge and my security pin, which (gasp) is in fact my legislative ID, and if need be, I'd have backed it up with (gasp) my legislative photo ID (taken by the DMV using their equipment)."

[ Parent ]
Sue is a freestater now? (0.00 / 0)
I'm sure she'll find that quite amusing.  Accusing someone of being a freestater is clearly the new form of McCarthyism.  Example: http://www.nhchallenge.org/art... accuses O'Brien and Bettencourt of being Libertarians, which I find really funny, as it seems the new attack strategy used by many is to say that while Republicans in general are fine and part of the system, bring back those honest conservatives, just so long they aren't those horrible libertarians that are the real problem...

And I did actually point to my badge and pin when I was asked, that wasn't hyperbole.

[ Parent ]
according to Susan's blue book entry (4.00 / 1)
Susan DeLémus's blue book bio indicates that she in fact a NH native... but perhaps she was (to quote one of Steve Vaillancourt's TV show sign off) "a free stater before there was a free state."

[ Parent ]
The Constitution is based on the assumption that all men are (0.00 / 0)
created good and suspicion to the contrary needs to be based on observed person-specific behavior. This assumption, of course, conflicts with the conservative preconceived notion that all men are created evil and governments are instituted to make them behave.
It's sort of a "which comes first?" thing.  Does good turn to evil or do we make good out of evil?  From a practical perspective, the latter is less likely, especially if we believe that God made man to begin with. Why would God make evil people? Why, as a legislator in Michigan asked the other day, would God keep making homosexuals, if He doesn't like them?
Why do Republicans want to serve the people, if they don't like them?
Nobody knows for certain, of their own experience, who their parents are.  We all have to take somebody's word for it.  So, in a sense, this ID thing is one of those impossible riddles with which people like to confuse.
Not even the subconscious knows which belly it slithered out of.

[ Parent ]
all of which (4.00 / 2)
you were affluent enough to afford and were mobile enough to access. You aren't a frail elderly woman who has never had a driver's license, who isn't well enough to take the trip to go get one in order to vote.

You aren't a person living outside, who can't afford to purchase an ID from the DMV.

In fact, I'd question your basic humanity at this point. The political party you belong to (and your fellow Freebaglipublibirchers have demonstrated nothing even remotely recognizable  as human decency this year.

This says so much. (4.00 / 1)
"Voting is the most fundamental defense against a runaway government," said House Democratic Leader Terie Norelli. "It should not be more difficult to exercise our fundamental right to vote than it is to carry a weapon."  Republican-sponsored bills pending in the Senate would allow anyone to carry a gun open or concealed without a license.
