Observations and Snark: A post debate open thread:

by: susanthe

The GOP candidates participating in last night's debate proved to be an uninspiring lot. No one varied from standard right wing talking points - in fact, all proved to be speakers of Sloganese, with varying degrees of skill and proficiency.

Observations:
The only candidate who served in the military is also the only candidate who wants to do something about defense spending.

Michelle Bachman mentioned her 23 foster children 3 times during the debate. Son of a mill worker, anyone?

Ron Paul used to display some wit and charm. Now he's just a cranky old guy. The best moment of the dopey "this or that" segment was when John King asked Ron Paul, "Blackberry or iphone?" Paul's deer-in-the-headlights look showed that what he REALLY wanted to answer  was "rotary dial phone."

susanthe :: Observations and Snark: A post debate open thread:
A lot of outright dishonesty on display last night.  Think Progress  took on the top 6 health care myths from last night's debate. This is handy rebuttal information for those who have Republicans in the family.

No love for the tricorner hat crowd. The tea party got no love from the elite candidates of the GOP. How will that play out in NH with the Teabaglitarian crowd?

Mitt Romney sounded strong - but his own record on jobs as MA governor is going to bite him in the behind. Speaking of Mitt's behind:

While posing, Mitt suddenly jumped and said: "Oh, my goodness!" - pretending that a waitress grabbed his butt. Apparently it's a joke from four years ago, when he claims someone grabbed him at a fundraiser.

Yeah, because pretending that a waitress grabbed your ass (at a diner in Derry)  is just the height of hilarity. Seriously - those women earn an hourly wage that is less than minimum wage - and this millionaire clown is mocking them?

Now that we've all had some time to digest - what's your takeaway from last night?

Pawlenty at a N. Conway house party (4.00 / 1)
T-Paw
attended a recent house party in North Conway:
The party host, Ray Shakir, introduced the former Minnesota governor with a few examples of Pawlenty's candor.

Pawlenty went to Iowa, Shakir said, the heart of corn country, and said he would not support federal ethanol subsidies, and he has been willing to admit when his past policy positions were a mistake.

"You're here to celebrate the next president of the United States," Shakir said, making clear which candidate he was backing at this early stage of the race.

Regular readers will remember Ray Shakir's comments about education to the town budget committee:

"Preparing kids for an adequate education is acceptable," he said. "Preparing kids for a good education is acceptable. Preparing kids for an outstanding world class education is unacceptable.

Ray doesn't have very good political instincts. Last time around, he was a Tancredo supporter.

"live rich or die" (0.00 / 0)
Wonderful description of the debate by a contributor of a Left Coast rag.

The quadrennial exercise known as "retail politics" opened Monday night in Manchester, New Hampshire, packaged like a jar of Grey Poupon beyond its expiration date. The personal representatives of America's top one percent came not to enjoy one of life's finer pleasures, but to tell the Granite State audience how to "live rich or die."
