Marie Claire calls out Kelly Ayotte

by: DianeR

Wed Jun 29, 2011 at 15:31:36 PM EDT

The move was a war on women, fueled by misinformation about federal funding for abortion....Thankfully, the bill did not make it past the Senate....If you, like us, have no desire to take giant leap backward in reproductive health, then tell these women what you think.

Marie Claire, a woman's magazine published by Hearst, and focused on fashion, beauty, and lifestyle topics--not politics--published a sidebar in their July 2011 issue entitled, "Who Are the Women Who Voted Against Health Care for Women?" It lists the 22 female reps and 2 senators who fell for right-wing propaganda. Senator Kelly Ayotte's name leaps off the page at you as one of only two female senators who voted for this. (The other is Kay Bailey Hutchison, rightie extraordinaire from the Republic of Texas.)

I think this is important because it will be seen by many female voters who might not be following politics that closely. I'm sure thousands of women in New Hampshire read Marie Claire.

Here's the list of women who voted to defund Planned Parenthood:

House of Representatives--all Republicans
Sandy Adams (FL)
Michele Bachmann (MN)
Diane Black (TN)
Marsha Blackburn (TN)
Ann Marie Buerkle (NY)
Renee Ellmers (NC)
Jo Ann Emerson (MO)
Virginia Foxx (NC)
Kay Granger (TX)
Vicky Hartzler (MO)
Nan Hayworth (NY)
Jaime Herrera Beutler (WA)
Lynn Jenkins (KS)
Cynthia Lummis (WY)
Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA)
Candice Miller (MI)
Shelley Moore Capito (WV)
Sue Myrick (NC)
Kristi Noem (SD)
Martha Roby (AL)
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL)
Jean Schmidt (OH)

Senate (both Republicans)

Kelly Ayotte (NH)
Kay Bailey Hutchison (TX)

Embarrassing. (4.00 / 3)
That's what Kelly Ayotte is to this state.

The Senator from K-Street (4.00 / 3)
who takes her orders from her corporate masters.  She is no Senator for me.

Sometimes I don't think you give Kelly (4.00 / 1)
enough credit.  She's not just a tool of the Washington right-wing lobby ... she's her own brand of calculated hate and discrimination.

Ayotte (4.00 / 2)
is an embarrassment for NH, and it is a shame to have to call her senator.  She's a Koch Brothers tool.   Shame on you, Ms. Ayotte.  Shame, shame, shame.

Thank goodness some media are doing their job! (0.00 / 0)
Offering a dose of reality couched in lifestyle banality sounds pretty good to me right about now. Hope some other women's publications follow suit.

I'm thrilled to see a publication use its voice to connect some dots outside the happy-talk, "buy these products and you'll be beautiful, men will love you, and you'll finally be happy" bubble!

""Hope is the dream of a soul awake.""

There is no reason to think that persons of a particular ethnic (0.00 / 0)
background are going to be more empathetic towards their "own kind" than other people.  Neither does gender determine empathy.
Many people who self-identify as Republicans now seek public office for the power to lord it over others. Obviously, female politicians are just as likely to be self-centered and insensitive as male ones.
