St. Hilaire's Shameful Political Ambition

by: William Tucker

Sun Sep 25, 2011 at 08:53:42 AM EDT

Did Executive Councilor Dan St. Hilaire sacrifice the health of 16,000 New Hampshire residents for personal political ambition? Tony Schinella reports on the political calculations behind St. Hilaire's vote to reject the Planned Parenthood contract that would have provided health care services in the state.

The political rumor mill began spinning about a St. Hilaire gubernatorial run in 2012 not long after he voted to defund Planned Parenthood in June of this year. Up until that vote, he was not considered a serious potential statewide candidate since he drew a lot of his support from liberal-to-moderate Republicans and might not survive a primary, where voters tend to be more conservative. ...

Earlier this year, some conservative leaders wondered openly about the swerve to the right with the defund vote, thinking that St. Hilaire might be considering a potential bid for governor in 2012.

In an interview with the Concord Monitor, St. Hilaire confirmed he is, in fact, considering a gubernatorial run.

"I'm at the stage of deciding whether I should be jumping into the race or not," St. Hilaire said.

Another deprivator lining up at the public trough. (0.00 / 0)
Legally depriving people of their human rights is such a nifty trick. And so traditional, going all the way back to the Constitution!

Human rights are such an inconvenience. Which is why "originalists" argue that in giving their consent, "we the people" agreed to give them up and to be ruled.

It's really a simple question.  "Do the people rule or are they to be ruled by a term-limited rotating dictatorship?"

Maybe (4.00 / 1)
we can get as many GOP candidates for governor as there are GOP candidates for president?  That would be a fascinating.

I take it (0.00 / 0)
he's not counting on the women's vote.

There's two competing theories here: (0.00 / 0)
A) Colin gets in race, scares the daylights out of Hilaire, who already has become a top target over his vote.  Hilaire shops his name to press for NH-Gov to give people impression he's bigger than he is, thus more money, support, etc... for EC relex.

B, or the Schinella one) Hilaire was going to use EC as springboard for NH-Gov all along, and the PP defund vote was supposed to earn him cred with the base preparatory to that.

I'm inclined to believe Theory A, but I'm curious to hear others' thoughts.

He'd be a tougher general election candidate than either Ovide or Smith.

Can you flesh that out a bit? n/t (0.00 / 0)

short version (0.00 / 0)
1. He has won elections before; Ovide has lost three, and Smith has never run for anything.
2. Better resume and a wider range or experience. Kevin Smith has worked for Craig Benson and run Conerstone.  Ovide has always been a lawyer at a big firm in Manchester. St. Hilaire was Merrimack County attorney, on the Concord city council, now in private practice.
3. Better name recognistion among one fifth of the state's voting population than Kevin Smith.

Not saying he would be a good governor, just that he would be tougher in a general election than the other two.

Thanks! (0.00 / 0)
Any speculation about who else might run?

Keep in mind that previously... (0.00 / 0)
He has run with the support of many supposedly liberal Democrats. He has been succesful in convincing manyof our "friends" that he is really just a Republican in name and will vote with us more oftern then not. He is a very dangerous and extremely ambitious creature!
