President Obama, re: Iraq -- A Promise Made, A Promise Kept

by: Rep. Jim Splaine

Fri Oct 21, 2011 at 17:11:06 PM EDT

( - promoted by William Tucker)

President Barack Obama has announced that almost all of the currently 39,000 U.S. soldiers in Iraq will be home for the holidays.

A promise made, and a promise kept.  A bit too late for too many, but at long-last the Bush/Cheney War is coming to an end.  About 4,500 American troops have been killed in the 9 year war, 250 of them since President Obama took office, but it's ending.

Now, if we can just get out of Afghanistan without more killings.  War is seldom an answer.

Unfortunately, just this week the President announced that we're sending about 100 "military advisers" into Uganda.  Hopefully they all come back, sooner than later.

Good news. (0.00 / 0)
This was good news, but republicans have voiced uncertainty and disrespect for Obama's announcement even though the SOFA was negotiated by Bush.  Romney, Perry, Cain...none have foreign policy experience, but they know more than the president!!

In the interest of shedding light on how the news is gathered (0.00 / 0)
and reported, let me share this short clip of Obama's message to the well-wishers at gatherings to honor his birthday in which he lists the end of the war in Iraq as one of the accomplishments his supporters can crow about as they promote his re-election.

That was on August 5, 2011.  For the following two months, there was nattering in the press about the extension of the Status of Forces Agreement negotiated by Bush/Cheney after the UN mandate ran out in hopes of salvaging the White House for Republicans. Since Democrats were campaigning on ending the war (Obama more strongly than Clinton and not as strongly as Dodd or Biden), Republicans sought to blunt the argument with a "me too" moment, aka SOFA.

The removal of 180,000 troops and the dismantling of over 100 bases is not done over-night.  Indeed, if there's one lesson we should take away from Iraq, it's that getting in is always quicker than getting out. What can be accomplished in a few seconds usually takes nine months to come out of the womb.
