Open Thread: Going to the Candidates Debate Edition

by: elwood

Sat Jan 07, 2012 at 20:40:41 PM EST

Laugh about it, shout about it,
When you've got to choose -
Every way you look at it you lose.

The next-to-last pre-primary debate starts at 9PM.

It appears to be a race for third place, with Romney and Paul likely finishing first and second. But third could be Santorum, Huntsman, or Gingrich.  Will they duke it out, ignoring Romney?

Rick Perry will be channeling Admiral Stockdale, wondering what he is doing on stage.

Get some more popcorn, this is another debate open thread.

Any predictions? (0.00 / 0)
Will Gingrich play Above It All, or go on the attack?

Will Santorum try to sell himself as less Spanish Inquisition, or double down?

Will Huntsman go right at Romney, or play Good Soldier in the wings for 2012?

Santorum and Paul scrapping (0.00 / 0)
So far, IMO, Santorum getting the better of it.

Perry jumping in to say, Don't they sound childish?

Social issues next (0.00 / 0)
Paul seems to be getting the most time - partly because other candidates object to his attacks on them.

Paul strong on "chickenhawks" and "too many undeclared wars."
Ducked Stephanopolous' question on just how his newsletter had  such inflammatory material without his knowledge.

Romney happy to see the knife fight for second place.

Mitt Romney doesn't know whether states can ban contraception. (4.00 / 2)
"No state wants to, it's a silly question."

Under Connecticut law birth control was illegal in the mid 1960s. The Supreme Court struck that down in Griswold.

If you are ignorant  of this stuff, you should be taking remedial American history, not running for President.

We just discussed this case (4.00 / 2)
in my high school Street Law class....  Mitt's welcome to join us on Tuesday!

"He who loves correction, loves knowledge.  He who hates reproof is stupid." - Proverbs 12:1

[ Parent ]
Historian Newt Gingrich believes the government (4.00 / 1)
establishes sacraments.

He doesn't want it to adopt a sacrament covering same sex marriage.

Gingrich: news media bias shows, why don't you (0.00 / 0)
ask about the Catholic Church being denied government funds to discriminate with? (Applause)

Perry: I'll send troops back to Iraq (4.00 / 3)
Otherwise Iran will move back in.

(Evidently Iran had occupied Iraq on Planet Perry.)

Romney on how he would deal with Iraq and Afghanistan: (0.00 / 0)
Well, of course it's a very serious decision. And you listen to a lot of people, and gather a lot of information. And you consider all the relevant factors...

I've interviewed job candidates like that, who kept ducking simple questions about how they would handle their job if they were hired.

They didn't get hired.

One hour into debate and no mention of George W. Bush (4.00 / 1)
and Dick Cheney.

We're talking about the 2012 model Yugo, not the 2000 model that cost you all that money and had all those crashes. Keep up!

Perry quits Presidential race, announces run for NH Governor (4.00 / 1)
Running on New Hampshire getting a state "Right to Work" law.

(The last time I checked, NH has an unemployment rate about 50% lower than Texas.)

Political correctness scolding from Santorum: (0.00 / 0)
"You shouldn't say 'middle class'.  It's class warfare."

To be fair, when he said "there are no classes in America" (4.00 / 1)
he may have simply been referring to the Republican project to eliminate teaching and schools.

I'd Like To Meet (0.00 / 0)
Anybody that takes Santorum seriously. Have never met one.

Not sure what I'd do if I met a Santorum supporter, though.

No'm Sayn?

The great thing about the New Hampshire primary (0.00 / 0)
is that it gives you an opportunity to personally meet the one person who takes Santorum seriously.

[ Parent ]
Barack Obama Won (0.00 / 0)
I think Mitt Romney did what he needed to, and held his own.  Jon Huntsman did the best of Romney's challengers, and Ron Paul showed that he is "different," and in this field that was an important thing for him to do to solidify a portion of the vote on Tuesday.

I thought Rick Perry struck out, and should have stayed home.  Rick Santorum did poorly, and shows that getting a quarter of the vote in Iowa with a small turnout in that state meant nothing for him, and doesn't impress New Hampshire voters.  His gay bashing is disgusting.

President Barack Obama was the ultimate winner, because this Republican field is so divided, so divisive, that none of them can support whomever the eventual nominee is with a straight face and in good conscience.
