Keene School Election, TODAY.....

by: Mike Caulfield

Mon Aug 27, 2007 at 12:41:58 PM EDT

I know this is a local issue, but last time we were hit with a surprise loss -- and to prevent a repeat of that I've volunteered to put it up here.

From Frank Murphy:

A special election vote is coming up this Tuesday, August 28,  on the approval of the redrawn teacher's contract for the Keene School District. Typically a special election has a phenomenally low turnout and a very few votes make the difference.  If you want to have a voice in Keene's public education system, this is an important issue on which to be heard. Please vote...it's a good habit that benefits the community.

Polls are open 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Wards 1, 2 & 3 Keene Recreation Center, 312 Washington St.,

Wards 4 & 5 First Baptist Church, 105 Maple Ave.

I'm actually a pretty frequent critic of public education, but the negotiation team has got a deal which is a good compromise. You can read the details here:

http://mikecaulfield...

The bottom line is if you voted for the budget last time, you want to show up this time to make sure it passes. And if you voted no last time, or more likely, if you know someone who voted no last time, you should review the budget details -- this is a reasonable deal, the bottom line of which is less than a twenty dollar tax increase for most homeowners.

If there are any other local votes coming up in other New Hampshire towns, please let us all know in the comments.

Nashua (0.00 / 0)
In Nashua we have municipal elections ("non-partisan") this year. On September 11, we have our mayoral primary and the general election is on November 6th.

The way we vote for Mayor is kind of like how the French vote for President, with the a first round where all mayoral candidates try and come in first or second place and then the Mayor being selected in a run-off between the top voter getters from the first round.

We also have a whole bunch of local offices, arguably more important, up for election: Board of Education, ward Alderman, and Alderman-at-Large.

It's not an "issues" vote like the sort you've got in the towns, but it's an important vote nonetheless.

This has been a real morale problem for both the teachers and the school board itself. As Mike says, the negotiations have resulted in a good deal, and the board has held off on other budget items.

It's scary when a relatively well-off town like Keene, with a longstanding commitment to public education, has trouble funding its schools and teachers. We can talk about what that means some other time. For now, let's just get the contract approved.

yes (0.00 / 0)
to what Elwood said.

The long term costs to our community if this fails will be disastrous.

It is a fair contract-let's get it done.

Contract appears to have passed (4.00 / 1)
with a solid margin in both polling places.

Neat thing i noticed from our stats

if you typed in keene nh school election into google:

http://www.google.co...

we were the first hit. Got a quite a number of hits for variations on that. I imagine people looking for their polling place.

It's good to have google mojo.

Numbers from the Sentinel: (4.00 / 2)
Keene School District voters passed a teachers' contract today, 1,995-1,192.

Voters okayed the four-year, $5.1 million contract by nearly 63 percent.
