Majority of NH Senate Democrats Are With Hillary!

by: Kathy Sullivan 2

Mon Nov 05, 2007 at 16:17:18 PM EST

With the recent endorsement by State Senator Lou D'Allesandro, eight Democratic members of the NH State Senate - a majority of our senate Democrats - have now endorsed Hillary Clinton for president! In endorsing Senator Clinton, Lou said that it is time to move beyond negative politcs, and that she is the only candidate with a strong, positive message.

As a lot of you know, I think different endorsements have different meanings. There are the big ones that make a lot of news, and then there are the ones that are important because the person will actually work for the candidate. I don't think endorsements in and of themselves bring votes - what brings votes is the work done by the people doing the endorsing.

The endorsement by eight of our 14 state senators is great news for the campaign because none of our state senators are ever content to be just names on a press release - they really work and contribute to campaigns.

Also, the Senators know the people in their district.  They have lists of supporters, volunteers, sign locations, community activists; they know who votes, and they know the issues that matter to NH voters.  It takes grass roots politics to elect a state senator in New Hampshire, and Hillary Clinton now benefits from the grass roots expertise of these eight senators.

There is some historical evidence that state senators work hard for their candidates. In the last two cycles, the candidate who received the support of the majority of the Democratic state senators went on to win the primary - John Kerry in 2004, and Al Gore in 2000. And at the time of those endorsements, their nominations were far from a sure thing.

Also, the support of the eight state senators shows that Hillary Clinton is appealing to a broad cross section of Democrats across the state who care about a number of different issues. Senators Larsen, Sgambati, Kelly, DeVries, D'Allesandro, Hassan, Reynolds and Estabrook cover a broad range of geographic ares - Manchester, Exeter, Plymouth, Keene, Durham, Concord, Dover, Laconia, Goffstown and Dover.  Their range of interests in issues is incredibly broad - health and human services with Senator Sgambati, budget and finance with Senator D'Allesandro, women's issues and finance with Senator Kelly, labor and security issues with Senator DeVries (my senator!), the environment and disability services with Senator Hassan, housing and new technologies with Senator Reynolds, education with Senator Estabrook, and, with Senate President Larsen, civil rights and the environment (each one has a lot more areas of concern and expertise, but I am just giving examples!).

I am very proud to be supporting Hillary Clinton with these eight state senators; they know the issues that New Hampshire faces, and they agree that Hillary Clinton is the best person to help us face those issues!

I can't tell you (0.00 / 0)
how much this fails to impress me. How much endorsements overall fail to affect me-not just now, ever.

While I will be 100% behind Clinton should she prevail, each day I hear more and more of us "non-senators" concerned that she may win the primary.

I thought NH (0.00 / 0)
was the live free or die state. not the bow down to the queen state.

Oh, Inev, (0.00 / 0)
You remind me of Aunt Ada Doom in Cold Comfort Farm - always muttering about seeing something nasty in the woodshed and all that.

In any event, NH is not the queen state, but Manchester is the Queen City!

Perhaps you're both being a bit melodramatic. (4.00 / 1)
A vast number of people have similar concerns about your candidate, Kathy, albeit perhaps they wouldn't word those concerns quite as our friend here did.

Of the fourteen member Majority Caucus (forgive me but writing "majority" never gets old for me) all of the senators have now endorsed a candidate.

Kathy listed the eight senators who are with Senator Clinton.

Senators Burling, Gottesman and Foster are with Senator Edwards.

Senators Cilley, Janeway and Clark are with Senator Obama.

NH has never had a better senate majority of either party. All fourteen are amazing. We are so fortunate to have them serving the people of New Hampshire.

status quo, business as usual - band wagon jumping and old favors from Bill's term...that's what I'm saying about the seven who endorsed Hillary - the three who endorsed my candidate are of course visionary - independent - free thinkers... I will say that I am very disappointed with the 2 first term senators from my region who endorsed Hillary.  I don't think it will help them in their reelection to by tied to Hillary and it's a shame to spend their new political capital on her behalf, but again if they had endorsed my choice I'd be out there making excuses for them.  I'll be glad when this primary season has passed us by and we can start party building on the local level again.

Which District are you in? (4.00 / 2)
You post reminds me of the old George Carlin Bit... " you ever notice that when you are driving everyone going faster than you is an idiot and every one going slower is a jerk"... I think he used more colorful language.

the good news (4.00 / 2)
The good news is that the presidential primary is so many months before the general election that there is a long recovery time.  Supporters of defeated candidates in 2004's primary were some of the strongest volunteers in 2006, and also a number of them were inspired to run for office, the most prominent example of whom is my congresswoman, Carol Shea Porter, who was a Clark person in 2004.

Do you hear us? Listen and listen good! (0.00 / 0)
We are the voice of America. We are the Sleeping Giant.

"We are not gonna quitely go away. Instead we're gonna go out and fight for what it is we believe in."

This is the first time that John Edwards has connected with me at my deepest sense of civic responsibility and patriotism. He knows, as Barack knows, that we are "our brothers keeper, our sisters keeper". Since I am mostly Buddhist, I don't toss those words around lightly.

Let's Roll - Obama '08 (with honorable mention and respect to Edwards '08)
