Elephant(s) in the Room

by: Dean Barker

Mon Nov 12, 2007 at 21:51:19 PM EST

This is an outstanding commercial. I encourage Team Sununu to stick firmly with this strategy. More of this and the Senator will be well on his way toward reelection to Never Never Land.

Aside: ("Death taxes?"  That's soooo Charlie Bass!)

Which of the many omissions, in your opinion, is the most jaw-droppingly glaring?  Take the poll!

What's the biggest elephant in the Sununu room?

There are so many! (0.00 / 0)
I'm going to have think about how to vote - there are so many elephants in the room.  I hope he continues to tell everyone he is on the Banking Committee, given how messed up so many huge national banks are as a result of subprime lending.  I'm thinking of starting to call him "No Account" John Sununu due to his failure to hold anyone accountable for anything during all his years in D.C. So many nicknames, do little time....

Energy and persistence conquer all things.

Good point. I still can't get over (0.00 / 0)
how Republicans try to take credit for small government in the era of George W. Bush.

Is "small" defined as "massive no-bid cronyism spending"? in GOPland?

[ Parent ]
Small government (0.00 / 0)
means "no responsibilities" and few achievements.  You know, what you'd expect from a little person.
Hey, isn't it enough that he's obedient to his leader?

But it's the fighting that bothers me.

"Aside: ("Death taxes?" That's soooo Charlie Bass!)" (0.00 / 0)
I'm reminded of an early-mid West Wing episode from the Sorkin era (Sorkin created and wrote for the first 4 seasons)..

DONNA (Assistant for the chief political liaison for the Democratic White House)
"Listen, you know who my boss is, right?"

CLIFF (Chief of Staff for GOP-majority Ways and Means Cmte.)
"I do."

DONNA
"And that he's one of the point men in this fight with Ways and Mean over the estate tax?"

CLIFF
"The death tax."

DONNA
"He doesn't like to call it that."

CLIFF
"We've been ordered to. There was a memo."

...

In the episode, the President vetoes a bill to eliminate the Estate Tax, and then fights to make sure the veto is sustained.

I really miss the West Wing (0.00 / 0)
Life is not the same without it.

How do you stop (4.00 / 1)
an elephant from charging ?

Next time, there may be no next time.

How can you tell (0.00 / 0)
an elephant is in your refridgerator ?

Next time, there may be no next time.

West Wing (4.00 / 1)
I'm reminded of another episode of West Wing, and I'll paraphrase:  "Let Sununu Be Sununu."  If he is, and if New Hampshire voters see the kind of Washington insider he has become, and that "Team Sununu" is about special interests, war interests, and corporate interests, he will not be returned to the United States Senate.

Let's work to be sure Democrats never become like he has, and "Let Democrats Be Democrats," in Washington and in New Hampshire.

By the way, in my summer job at an amusement park/zoo in Maine, I've cleaned up the elephant pen.  You don't want to know what that is like.

If the country were run by Sorkinite idealists, we'd be far, far better off. (0.00 / 0)

Clinate Change (4.00 / 1)
Just have to say, like father like son.
When I was a summer student in Law & Government at the ASP at St. Paul's School in 1989 we had the privilege to have BIG John Sununun come to visit (son, Michael was my intern) and I remember then as a starry-eyed teenager asking the then Chief of Staff about the hole in the ozone layer and global warming.

I was "relieved" ;-0 to find that it didn't exist and that there was no such thing as global warming.

Some things, unlike climate, never change.

Feeling hopeful since 2004...

Well then, based on that comment, (0.00 / 0)
this diary is custom made for you.

Thanks, I needed that! (0.00 / 0)
Trip down memory lane... too many Sununus, so little time or is it too much time!

Feeling hopeful since 2004...

Still denying climate change.. (0.00 / 0)
I met with Grant Bosse (Sununu's Evironmental LA) two weeks ago as part of the Power Shift Lobby Day, and when a Dartmouth freshman asked him where his boss stood on reducing carbon emissions 80% by 2050 because "that's the bare minimum needed to avoid climate catastrophe according to many scientists"
Bosse interrupted, "well that is assuming climate change exists, and that's debatable."

The visual of him zapping here and there (0.00 / 0)
teleporting 12"-18" on screen like a bargain basement Nightcrawler of the X-Men...

I guess it keeps the commercial a bit less static, but the subtext of the Candidate Who Can't Be Pinned Down seems unhelpful...

Flashing around the screen. (4.00 / 1)
To me, that effect just makes it seem like they couldn't get him to make the whole speech into the camera without screwing up, so they had to splice his greatest hits together.

The effect can be used well in some circumstances, but since, as I implied, this would have been better as a continuous speech, this isn't the right place for it.

Small business savings. (0.00 / 0)
I think it would be neat if somebody figured out how much a small business would save in dollars and aggravation if it didn't have to pay into workmen's comp for medical coverage and the medical portion of liability insurance could be removed.  When everyone has a health account, all of these separate pots can be consolidated into one.

Oh, he can't be one of those elitist Republicans! (0.00 / 0)
He's wearing a sweater!

Great disguise. Awkward to sprint in though.

I wonder if when the camera pans down he's wearing shorts?

most jaw dropping aspect? he speaks! (0.00 / 0)
I didnt know he engaged in verbal communication. I suspect  that the last time I or most of his constituents actually heard his voice was in 2002.
I've often thought of his five years of silence on the phone jamming as " The Curious Incident of the Dog Who Did Not Bark".

"But, in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope." Si se puede. Yes we can.

Can't stop laughing... (0.00 / 0)
most jaw dropping aspect? he speaks!

It's true.  Unless you are a member of the Cato Institute or somesuch, you might never hear his voice.

Competition? (0.00 / 0)
If this is competition then Shaheen has it in the bag -- there will be nothing to post about even with more phone jamming.  Doug you should help him out, your BR video was light years ahead of this thing.
