Clinton Projected Winner in Nevada

by: Mike Hoefer

Sat Jan 19, 2008 at 16:39:38 PM EST

With 59% of Precincts reporting CNN is projecting Hillary Clinton to be the winner of the NV Caucuses.
-- Clinton 50%
-- Obama 45%
-- Edwards 5%

Results are inline with polling averages that had a 5-6% advantage for Clinton. No word on the split of the 25 delegates up for grabs.

Edwards @ 5% is a bit of a surprise to me. Will he get delegates for that? I wonder if it will impact his thinking going in to SC? He is polling at 15% there.

SC is next Saturday for the Dems. It is the first state where Barack Obama has had a sustained polling advantage going into the voting booth.

7:15 pm Update: With 97.44% Reporting
-- Clinton 50.75%
-- Obama 45.15%
-- Edwards 3.75%
-- Kucinich .05%

And... Kos is reporting that somehow Obama will end up with 13 Delegates vs. Hillary's 12. Need to read up on that one.

Edwards campaign to reasses (0.00 / 0)
Just talked to some friends from NH who went out to Nevavad...going in to some of the precincts in Nevada, Edwards had 10 -12%, but when like in Iowa it was seen that he was not viable, those votes went elsewhere. He will stay in till South Carolina, but then most likely bow out, IMHO

R'nR.

I'm bummed 'bout JRE tanking in NV. How many caucus goers in NV around 10K?

97% Reporting
Clinton   5,318   51%
Obama   4,732   45%
Edwards 394     4%

With approximately 1.04 million registered voters, this caucus is a joke.

I know, I know and I hate it when others say such things.

It is a win for Clinton, but I can't bring myself to be OK with the simple fact that <1% of NV showed up to help pick our nominee.

Shall we blame the press some more?

Those aren't the votes (0.00 / 0)
Those are the number of delegates to the state convention won. What I've read is somewhere over 110,000 people voted in the Democratic caucuses.

I wish that made me feel better.

Although Obama getting more delegates then Clinton, if that is true, will go a long way with moi.

Thanks for the info.

Not 10% (0.00 / 0)
First you need to determine how many registered Democrats are in Nevada then figure out what percentage 112,000 voters would be. My guess is that they had around a 30% turnout - so for a first time caucus - in a state that is rather difficult to organize - it is pretty impressive.

Democrats solve problems, Republicans sit and say no.

CNN had NV as having 1.04 million registered voters.

Here:
1,043,555 total registered voters -- 41% Democratic, 40% Republican, 16% Independent/non-partisan, 5% Other

Dean reported 115,800 NV Dem caucus goers.

RATM

The movie ran through me
The glamour subdued me
The tabloid untied me
I'm empty please fill me
Mister anchor assure me
That Baghdad is burning
Your voice it is so soothing
That cunning mantra of killing
I need you my witness
To dress this up so bloodless
To numb me and purge me now
Of thoughts of blaming you
Yes the car is our wheelchair
My witness your coughing
Oily silence mocks the legless
Those who travel now in coffins
On the corner
The jury's sleepless
We found your weakness
And it's right outside your door

Now testify
Now testify
It's right outside your door
Now testify
Yes testify
Its right outside your door

With precision you feed me
My witness I'm hungry
Your temple it calms me
So I can carry on
My slaving sweating the skin right off my bones
On a bed of fire I'm choking on the smoke that fills my home
The wrecking ball is rushing
Witness your blushing
The pipeline is gushing
While here we lie in tombs
While on the corner
The jury's sleepless
We found your weakness
And it's right outside your door

Now testify
Yeah testify

I had to turn off the news tonight. Again. (4.00 / 1)
The flame's not entirely out yet, but it sure is flickering hard.

It's starting to look like the same-old same-old to me, hard not to get tired of being faced with the reality of choices I am really not satisfied with.

Maybe it's time for me to focus on state issues again, ain't much I can do about the national ones at this point.

Now, where did I put those clothespins?

Setting realistic expectations is part of the process.

Senator Obama National Field Director Temo Figueroa 'The Nevada election is going to come down to: Whoever gets the endorsement of the Culinary Workers Union, more than likely, is going to win Nevada." [Politico, 1/10/08]

Senator Obama's endorsement from the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 turned out to be far less influential than initially thought. Turnout on the Strip -- where 9 casinos served as mobile precincts -- was down and Senator Clinton appeared to have won the majority of the casinos, including Bellagio and Paris.

Good think that lawsuit thingy didn't work out huh? (0.00 / 0)
Obama and Hillary results pretty close to the polling... Not an upset win or a blowout.

On to SC... I wonder what the lawsuit will be this week... :-o

Excuses (0.00 / 0)
I cannot imagine that Senator Obama or his allies are never going to challenge a change in the rules which unfairly benefit a particular group or candidate.

Senator Clinton won in those casinos on the strip because her campaign and her AFSCME union people beat the Obama Culinary union people at their own game.

Aren't Primaries Great? (0.00 / 0)
Don't waste too much time computing delegates from Nevada - or Iowa, for that matter - since none will be selected until later this spring. The caucuses in each state chose delegates to county conventions who in turn choose delegates to district and ultimately state conventions. The state conventions - Nevada's is in April, Iowa's in June - choose the actual delegates who go to Denver. If a candidate with delegates (John Edwards?) drops out, those delegates go back into play, so the ultimate outcome may differ from the caucus results.

How about adding this to the party's to-do list:

GET RID OF CAUCUSES!

Day-long primaries like ours give more people a chance to participate and allow absentee voting. Each of the candidates in New Hampshire held caucuses to choose potential delegates, but the allocation of delegates comes from the primary results. It seems like a much more inclusive way of doing things.

After four years of posts bashing the "rubber stamp" NH primary, (4.00 / 4)
and calls for getting rid of us because other parts of the country don't get to participate early, seeing Kos complain about the NV caucus system and its delegate count is kind of funny.

This year we were neither a rubber stamp, nor do the caucus states look too good.
