Fundraising and Phonejamming

by: Dean Barker

Mon Mar 26, 2007 at 15:33:07 PM EDT

Short but sweet:

* A little bird flew in to tell me that today around 4pm on NPR's All Things Considered there might be a story on the new developments (including the link to the prosecutor purge) in the phonejamming saga. Update: Here's a link to the audio in case you missed it.  Not much there that's new to anyone who's been following it here, but there is a nice quote from Hodes and it does mean the story will get wider attention.

* When you listen in to the program, and the outrage rises up again over how the GOP resorted to crime to get Sununu elected, consider dropping some of your hard earned change into one of the candidates featured in our ActBlue Blue Hampshire page (also now on our left margin).  Currently you can give to Marchand, Hodes, Shea-Porter, and a fund that will eventually go to the Senate primary winner.  Two great reasons to donate now through this venue: 1) it's coming on the end of the first quarter, and our Democratic candidates need to make as strong a showing as possible, and 2) by going through our ActBlue page, you are telling your preferred candidate that you're reading and learning about them right here on Blue Hampshire.

Former NH GOP chair (0.00 / 0)
quoted in story:

"It was harebrained, it was criminal, but it was a local affair."

I've forgotten what Duprey's own scandal was.

Hodes is interviewed, too, wondering about AG's involvement.

thanks (0.00 / 0)
for the heads-up.  i just heard the story & it was, I think, a good summary and analysis.

Question (0.00 / 0)
A Democrat said to me today that NH Democrats run the risk of looking overreaching if they keep talking about this.  Do you agree?  I am still outraged, but Susanb raised a good point on another topic of whether any of us talk to regular voters.

It's an interesting question (0.00 / 0)
And I'll fess up to not casually talking about politics at the local diner.

Several possible current public mindsets:

  1. Tobin got off, that proves the Dems have been exagerating this
  2. Everybody does it.
  3. I don't quite understand -- or care -- what happened five years ago. BOOOO-ring.
  4. The Republicans were caught red-handed, cheating, several times. But come on! That's so 2002. What are you going to do about the War and the schools?
  5. The GOP got away with it -- and the Dems are such wimps they will continue to get away with it.

When it gets too hard to figure out the most politically advantageous position, we are sometimes forced to fall back on principle.

These bastards are thieves and crooks, and they will keep stealing elections, and we had damn well better keep going after them with everything we've got.

I've been on it since day 1.1 and have raised funds for the legal defense. I love Paul Twomey

When this site first went up, (4.00 / 1)
I figured on reminding readers about it constantly, but when the case settled, I thought it was no longer profitable to do so.

However, now that there is a possible link between it and the prosecutor purge, I have gone 180 degrees again.  If every high level action out of Justice was suspect to this kind of slowing or speeding up of investigation and indictment based on party politics, that is a tremendously important story that has local and national ramifications in much the same way that Sununu's run for 2008 has local and national implications.  When you add to that Sununu's getting out ahead of it and calling for Gonzo's firing first, it gets curiouser and curiouser, and more and more relevant to his re-election effort, in my opinion.

But if I had a nickel for every time I was wrong, I'd be rich, so who knows?

The link to the prosecutor purge is key. (0.00 / 0)
That makes it completely relevant - and not just broadly relevant, but a different set of details than have been repeatedly gone over become relevant.  I wouldn't be for asking the same questions again, but these really are different ones.

That sounds... (0.00 / 0)
More like used Republican Toilet Paper, ahhh  Talking Point to me, or a Democratic Party member listening to a Republican when they should be surrounding themselves with progressives...

No, not at all (0.00 / 0)
This was someone who doesn't like Republicans on principle, and doesn't want anything to backfire on the Democrats.  Thinking through political strategy is a good thing.

Agreed (0.00 / 0)
And both the Republican Party and the pundits have been trying out that theme: "New Hampshire Democrats are still whining about the phone jamming case five years later, instead of having a vision of their own."

But I don't think it will work.
