Fergus Cullen Welcomes Voters to the Democratic Party

by: Dean Barker

Fri Jan 16, 2009 at 06:01:57 AM EST

On his way out the door, Chairman Cullen invites voters to consider... the issues that define the Democratic party:
"we have to be talking about issues that centrist votes care about. I suggest that we talk less about taxes and less about social issues and more about education, health care and conservation, as three examples."

Thank goodness John H. Sununu is taking the helm instead.  We all know how his son felt about health care.

And then of course there's Senior Senator Judd Gregg, who twice voted against expanding health insurance for kids in 2007, and will likely do so again in a week or so.

Here's a nice list of House Republicans who voted against SCHIP last session and lost their re-election.

Good luck to Fergus (4.00 / 2)
We need two strong parties challenging each other, with different approaches that try to solve the problems people care about. I hope his call is heeded.

Yesterday... (4.00 / 2)
Fergus and I had our last joint appearance. We participated in the Manchester chamber's Leadership Manchester. At the forum Fergus said "I fear we have lost a generation. By the next presidential election, not one voter under the age of thirty will have a memory of Ronald Reagan as president. The Republican Party may as well be talking about Millard Fillmore. Just saying we need to go 'back to Reagan' doesn't connect with them."

A participant immediately raised his hand and asked Fergus: "And how does electing a 74 year old Reagan era governor going to help the NH Republicans connect with the voters of NH?".

You gotta give Fergus credit. He could have punted. He replied that "Sununu wanted to be chairman".

Democrats solve problems, Republicans sit and say no.

Reagan was a (4.00 / 3)
disaster for this nation. The economic collapse can be traced to policies implemented during his term in office. Why the hagiography around him is beyond me.

Telling young people "going back to Reagan" is positive is telling them to enjoy their mortgage sized college loans (Reagan dismantled the grant system). Also, the Gitmo/ Abu Ghraib torture schemes can be traced to Ollie North and the Iran-Contra conspirators who out sourced and funded death squads in Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. The peculiar thing is now it is "acceptable". At least back then they had to hide it.

I know what the Republicans can do to improve their party platform, but I'm not going to share it here. They need to be out of power for a good, long time. They have ruined this country and also stymied the state of New Hampshire from being the best it could be.

There's your answer. (0.00 / 0)
You're blaming Reagan.  That's what Republicans want--someone to blame for everything that goes wrong.  That's why W is going down as great.  All the wrong that was done in his name and he never seemed to mind.

and they wanted Sununu (0.00 / 0)
go figure

"Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does." Allen Ginsberg

They are insane for pushing out Fergus (4.00 / 2)
We've mocked him here, and I think his claim he's raised the level of debate is not true.

But he went to war with the party he had, and considering that he did well. He certainly brought a view of the Republican Party that was at least partially grounded in reality. When he spun crap, I felt like he knew he was spinning it.

Sununu has no such quality.
